Chapter 5

It was irrational, impossible, and completely against every instinct of self-preservation she had, but it was true. When she thought about his cold expression, his commanding aura, or the dangerous reputation that preceded him, she felt no terror. Instead, she felt... safe. A strange, inexplicable sense of security washed over her whenever she thought about him. It was as if her heart recognized something her mind could not, telling her that no matter how scary he looked or what people said, he was someone she could trust. Someone who would never hurt her. The feeling made no sense. It frustrated her, confused her, and scared her more than any rumor ever could. --- Meanwhile, high above the campus grounds, on the rooftop of the Student Council Building, Adrian stood overlooking the sprawling university grounds. The afternoon wind swept through his dark hair, whipping the ends slightly against his forehead, carrying the scent of grass, rain, and the city beyond the gates. From this height, everything looked small—the buildings, the pathways, the students moving like ants below. From here, Adrian felt like he was above it all, separate from the rules and chaos that governed everyone else. This was his territory. His kingdom. Behind him stood Marcus and several high-ranking members of his organization—men who followed him blindly, men who feared him, men who respected him more than anyone else in the world. None of them dared speak or move without his permission. They could tell their leader was deep in thought, lost in a place they could not follow, his mind working at a speed they could barely comprehend. He stood rigid, his hands clasped behind his back, his gaze fixed on the distance, yet seeing nothing but the image of a girl with glasses and plain clothes. Finally, after what felt like hours of heavy silence, Adrian broke the stillness. His voice was low, calm, but carried an unmistakable weight of command. "Find everything you can about Sophia Reyes." Marcus frowned slightly, stepping forward. "You already know her, don't you? From before?" "I used to," Adrian replied, his voice distant. Memories of five years ago flooded back—sunlight through classroom windows, a girl sitting by the glass, a soft smile he had watched a thousand times but never returned. "We went to high school together." "Then why investigate her?" Marcus asked, confused. "Surely you remember what she was like back then. This girl... she seems different. Quiet, reserved, blends into the background... not exactly the type you used to talk about." Adrian turned slowly to face him, his expression darkening, his eyes swirling with shadows and determination. "Precisely. She’s different. She’s changed. And she’s hiding something." He leaned forward slightly, his tone dropping lower, becoming more intense. "Everything about her appearance, her behavior, her mannerisms... it’s all a performance. A mask. Just like the one I wear." Marcus crossed his arms over his chest, thinking. "You think she's pretending not to know you? That she recognizes you and is playing dumb for some reason?" "No." The answer came immediately, sharp and absolute, without a single moment of hesitation. Adrian knew. He knew people. He knew lies. He knew deception. And he knew her. He had spent five years studying her memory, five years holding onto every detail of her face, her expressions, her eyes. When she looked at him earlier, there was nothing but genuine confusion. Nothing but emptiness. Nothing but the honest uncertainty of someone looking at a complete stranger. He knew the look in Sophia's eyes. The confusion. The uncertainty. The emptiness. The way she looked at him and saw nothing familiar. She truly didn't remember him. And that terrified him more than anything else in the world. It was worse than if she had hated him, worse than if she had forgotten him on purpose. It meant something had been taken from her. Something had been broken. And if she had forgotten him, then she had forgotten everything—the feelings, the moments, the quiet connection they shared. She had forgotten the best part of her life, and perhaps the only good part of his. Marcus noticed the unusual concern, almost vulnerability, in his friend's voice—a side of Adrian that almost no one else ever saw. "Boss... what exactly happened back then? You never told me the full story about why she disappeared." Adrian looked away, staring out over the campus again. His jaw tightened, the muscle feathering beneath his skin. The pain of that memory was still fresh, sharp enough to cut him open even now. Five years ago, he was just a quiet, intelligent boy, popular and handsome but distant, keeping people at arm’s length. But she... she had been the one person who made him want to be closer. She was the one person who made his heart race just by walking past his desk. She was the one person he wanted to talk to, to get to know, to tell her everything he felt. But he never did. Before he could gather the courage, before he could find the right words, before he could even say hello properly... she disappeared. Without a trace. Without a goodbye. Without ever knowing that someone had been waiting for her, watching her, loving her from the shadows. He had searched for her. He had asked everyone, checked every record, visited every place he thought she might be. But it was as if she had vanished into thin air. Her family moved away. Her records were sealed. No one knew where she went or why. That loss, that emptiness, that desperation to find her again... it was what drove him to become powerful. It was what drove him to build his empire, his influence, his strength. He swore he would never be powerless again, never be unable to find the things that mattered most to him. When he finally answered, his voice was barely above a whisper, heavy with emotion he could no longer suppress. "I never stopped." Marcus nodded slowly, understanding settling in his chest. "I’ll get the team on it immediately. We’ll dig through every record, every report, every hospital file, every news article from the day she left high school up until now. We’ll find out exactly where she was, what happened to her, and why she’s pretending to be someone she’s not." "Make it fast," Adrian commanded, turning back with fire in his eyes. "And make sure no one touches her. No one. If anyone so much as breathes in her direction without my permission... they answer to me." "Understood." Marcus bowed his head before signaling the others to follow him back down. Adrian remained on the rooftop alone, the wind tugging at his clothes. He looked toward the building where Sophia’s last class was held. He had her back now. He had found her. But now, he had to fight to keep her. And more importantly, he had to fight to bring her back—to make her remember, to make her feel, to make her his again. --- That evening, Sophia left the library later than usual. The sun had already dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of deep purple and indigo. The campus was nearly empty now, the crowds of students gone, the noise and chatter replaced by the quiet hum of evening insects and the distant traffic from the city roads. Streetlights illuminated the pathways in pools of warm yellow light, casting long, stretching shadows across the pavement. Sophia adjusted her glasses, pushing them up the bridge of her nose, and pulled her cardigan tighter around herself against the cooling breeze. She began walking toward the dormitory, her footsteps echoing softly against the concrete. Her mind was still racing, still stuck on the events of the day, still trying to make sense of everything she had felt and heard. But as she walked deeper into the quieter, darker section of the campus—the shortcut through the old garden that led directly to the residential halls—a strange feeling settled in her stomach. A prickle along the back of her neck. A sensation of weight. Of being observed. As though someone was watching her from the shadows. She slowed her pace, glancing nervously from side to side. The trees rustled gently, leaves swaying in the wind. Nothing moved. Nothing was there. Yet the feeling remained, growing stronger, heavier, more menacing with every step she took. She quickened her pace, her heart beginning to beat faster. Behind her, faint footsteps echoed. She walked faster. The footsteps behind her quickened too, matching her pace exactly, closing the distance. Sophia froze in the middle of the path, her breath catching in her throat. Her hands turned cold, trembling around the straps of her bag. Slowly, reluctantly, she turned around. Three unfamiliar men stood several feet away, blocking her path back the way she had come. None of them wore university uniforms. They were dressed in dark, rough clothing—leather jackets, hoodies, worn jeans—their appearance rough and unkempt, completely out of place on school grounds. Their expressions were hard, cold, predatory. Their eyes were fixed on her, unblinking, hungry. "Who are you?" Sophia asked nervously, her voice barely audible, trembling slightly. "What do you want?" The men exchanged glances, smirks spreading across their faces. One of them, the tallest and broadest, stepped forward, his hands stuffed into his pockets. He looked her up and down with a gaze that made her skin crawl. "So that's the girl," he muttered to his companions, his voice rough and gravelly. "Smaller than I expected. Looks harmless enough." Fear crept fully into Sophia's chest, cold and sharp. She took a step back, her heels scraping against the pavement. The men stepped forward. Another step. Another step. They were closing in, surrounding her, cutting off any chance of escape. Sophia backed away until she hit the stone wall of the garden fence, nowhere left to go. Panic surged through her veins. She opened her mouth to scream, but her throat felt tight, no sound coming out. Then suddenly— The roar of an engine tore through the quiet air. A black motorcycle skidded to a halt right between Sophia and the three men, tires screeching against the road, kicking up a small cloud of dust and gravel.
