The men immediately froze, stumbling back in shock, their faces draining of color. The arrogance and amusement vanished instantly, replaced by pure, unmasked terror.
The rider swung his leg over the seat and stood up, removing his helmet slowly. Dark hair fell back into place as he straightened up to his full height.
Adrian.
Sophia stood speechless, her hand pressed against her chest. She stared at him, her mind blank. How? Why? How did he find her here?
The color had completely drained from the faces of the three men. They looked at Adrian as if they had just seen a ghost—or something far worse. They knew exactly who he was. They knew exactly what it meant to stand in his way.
Without a word, Adrian stared at them. He didn't shout. He didn't draw a weapon. He didn't make a threat. He just stood there, his posture relaxed yet lethal, his eyes cold and empty, filled with a darkness that promised pain, suffering, and destruction.
The coldness in his eyes was enough. It was more than enough to convey everything he wanted to say: Leave. Now. Or regret it forever.
The men didn't wait for another second. They didn't try to explain. They didn't try to fight. They turned around and fled, scrambling over bushes and running blindly into the darkness, disappearing as fast as they had appeared.
Within seconds, they were gone.
Silence returned to the pathway, but it was different now—lighter, safer.
Sophia stood still, catching her breath, her heart still hammering wildly. She looked at Adrian, who remained standing where he was, watching the direction they had fled.
"What just happened?" she whispered, more to herself than to him. "Who were those men? Why did they run just because you showed up?"
Adrian remained silent for a moment, his mind working fast. He already knew who those men were. He recognized the colors they wore, the way they moved, the marks on their clothes. They belonged to the Silver Vipers—a rival gang that had been trying to challenge his territory for months.
And that could only mean one thing.
His enemies had discovered Sophia's existence. They knew she was important to him. They knew she was the weakness he had tried so hard to hide.
And they had come for her.
Far sooner than he expected. Far sooner than he was ready for. He had planned to keep her hidden, to protect her from the shadows while he uncovered the truth. But now, the game had changed. She was a target now. As long as she was associated with him, her life would be in danger.
Sophia approached cautiously, still shaken, her legs feeling weak beneath her. She looked up at him, her glasses slightly askew.
"Were they afraid of you?" she asked softly, her voice full of wonder and confusion.
A small, almost imperceptible smile appeared on Adrian's lips—a smile that didn't reach his eyes, heavy with the weight of what he had to do now.
"Maybe," he replied simply.
"Who were they?" she pressed, looking back toward the empty path. "What did they want?"
"Nobody important," he lied smoothly, stepping closer to her, his presence enveloping her like a shield. "Just people who don't belong here. They won't bother you again."
The answer only confused her further, raising more questions than it solved. Before she could ask another question or demand a real explanation, Adrian held out a spare black helmet toward her, his hand extended, waiting.
"I'll take you back to your dorm."
Sophia blinked, surprised. "I... I can walk. It's just a few minutes away. I'm fine now."
"No."
His tone left no room for argument. It was firm, absolute, final. Not a command, but a statement of fact that could not be changed.
Sophia stared at him, at the intensity in his gaze, at the way he looked at her as if she were the only thing in the world that mattered. For some reason, despite everything she knew about him, despite the fear everyone else felt, despite the danger she had just faced... she obeyed.
She took the helmet from his hands, her fingers brushing against his for a split second, sending a jolt of electricity up her arm. She felt a sudden rush of warmth, a familiar spark that made her head spin.
As she climbed onto the back of the motorcycle, sitting awkwardly behind him, she felt strangely comfortable. The seat, the position, the feeling of being close to him... it felt natural. It felt right.
As though she had done this before. Many times.
The thought made her frown.
That was impossible. Wasn't it? She had never ridden a motorcycle before in her life. She had never been this close to a man before. She had certainly never been close to Adrian Castillo before.
Moments later, the engine roared to life beneath them, and the motorcycle sped through the campus roads, moving faster than anything else on the grounds. The wind brushed against her face, whipping her hair back, cooling the heat in her cheeks. The scenery blurred into streaks of light and shadow as they wove through pathways and gates.
Instinctively, without even thinking about it, Sophia wrapped her arms tightly around Adrian's waist, holding onto his jacket for balance, pressing herself lightly against his back.
The moment she touched him, a sudden image flashed through her mind, bright and sharp, cutting through the fog of her memories.
A boy laughing beneath the shade of cherry blossom trees, petals falling all around him. A warm, bright smile directed straight at her. A familiar voice calling her name softly, sweetly, lovingly.
"Sophia..."
Then—
Pain exploded inside her head, sharp and piercing, like a thousand needles stabbing into her skull.
Sophia gasped, her eyes squeezing shut, her grip tightening on his jacket. The vision disappeared instantly, vanishing back into the darkness where it came from, leaving only pain and confusion behind.
"What's wrong?" Adrian asked immediately, his voice raised slightly over the noise of the engine, sensing the sudden change in her. He slowed the bike slightly, glancing back at her.
She pressed a hand against her temple, trying to rub the ache away, her breathing shallow and fast.
"Nothing..." she lied, her voice trembling. "Just... a headache. It’s nothing."
But for the first time since the accident three years ago...
A forgotten memory had begun trying to return. A piece of the puzzle had slipped loose. A fragment of the truth she had lost was fighting its way back to the surface.
And neither of them knew that the truth hidden within those memories, the secrets buried deep in her past, and the dangerous world Adrian lived in... would change their lives forever.
