Chapter 10

Adrian stared at her, stunned by her courage, by the strength he had always known she possessed, even when she was just the quiet girl by the window. A slow, proud smile touched his lips. "That’s the girl I remember. The one who was brave enough to carry a secret love for years without faltering." He stood up, turning back to Marcus, his demeanor shifting instantly to that of a commander ready for battle. "Double the patrols around the perimeter," Adrian ordered, his voice sharp and authoritative. "No one comes within fifty meters of this building without being identified. Post men at every entrance, every corridor, every exit. I want eyes everywhere." "Done," Marcus nodded, typing quickly into his tablet. "And continue the investigation into the accident," Adrian added, his tone lowering, becoming darker. "Dig deeper. I want to know who was driving the other car. I want to know if there was any connection to rival groups, or anyone who had a grudge against my family or me. If her memory loss wasn't just an accident... if it was done on purpose... then whoever did it is going to pay." The threat in his voice was cold, absolute, and deadly. Sophia realized then that Adrian Castillo was a man who loved fiercely, but also a man who fought fiercely. And she was the center of both. --- Later that evening, after the initial rush of preparations had settled, Adrian led Sophia to a private suite within the building—comfortable, well-furnished, and completely secure. He stood by the door, hesitating, not wanting to leave her but knowing he had work to do to keep her safe. "You can rest here," he said softly. "Everything you need is in the room. I will be just down the hall. If you need anything... anything at all... you call me. I will come immediately." Sophia stood near the window, looking out at the dark campus grounds, illuminated only by streetlights and the occasional movement of guards patrolling below. She turned back to him, her expression thoughtful. "Adrian... when you said you never spoke to me in high school... why? If you felt this way, if you cared this much... why didn't you ever say anything?" Adrian paused, his hand resting on the doorframe. A faint, sad smile touched his lips as he looked down at the floor, remembering those days clearly. "Because I was a coward," he admitted quietly. "Back then, I wasn't powerful. I wasn't feared. I was just a quiet, ordinary student who was too afraid of rejection, too afraid that if I spoke and you didn't feel the same way... I would lose even the chance to look at you from afar. You were bright, happy, full of life... and I thought I wasn't good enough. I thought I had nothing to offer you." He looked up at her, his eyes burning with intensity. "But when you disappeared... I realized that being silent was the biggest mistake of my life. I swore that if I ever found you again, I would never hide how I felt. I would never let you doubt that you are everything to me." Sophia walked toward him, stopping just inches away. She reached up, her hand touching his cheek, feeling the warmth of his skin, the strength of his jaw. "You were always enough," she whispered. "Even then. Even now. You were always the only one." Before either of them could say more, a sharp, loud crash echoed from somewhere outside, followed by the sound of shouting and breaking glass. The building shook slightly. Adrian reacted instantly. He stepped in front of Sophia, shielding her with his body, his hand reaching beneath his jacket to grip the weapon concealed there. His senses were heightened, every muscle tense, ready to fight. "Stay here," he commanded, his voice low and urgent. "Lock the door behind me. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus. Do you understand?" "Adrian, be careful!" Sophia cried out, her heart pounding with fear—not for herself, but for him. He looked back at her for one second, his eyes filled with determination and love. "I will come back to you. I promise." He turned and rushed out the door, closing it firmly behind him. She heard the lock click into place, followed by his footsteps running down the corridor, shouting orders to his men. Sophia stood alone in the middle of the room, her hands trembling. The noise outside grew louder—shouts, the sound of fighting, the crackle of radios. She realized then that this was only the beginning. The shadows of Adrian’s world had not just touched her; they had engulfed her completely. But as she stood there, listening to the chaos outside, another fragment of memory flashed through her mind—clearer than ever before. A boy standing in the rain, holding an umbrella over her. A promise. A vow to protect her no matter what. And beneath that memory, another one, older and deeper: A boy standing in a classroom doorway, watching her, smiling softly when she looked up. A connection that had never broken, even when her mind forgot. She pressed her hand against her chest, feeling the familiar longing, but now it was mixed with something else—hope. And courage. "I'm here," she whispered to the empty room, to the man fighting for her life just outside. "And I'm not leaving. Not again." Down in the main hall, Adrian stood at the center of the chaos, surrounded by his men, facing a group of intruders who had breached the outer defenses. His expression was terrifying—cold, furious, and absolutely lethal. "They want her," Marcus said beside him, blocking a punch from an intruder and disarming him effortlessly. "They came straight for the building. They know she's inside." Adrian kicked a man back, sending him crashing into a table, his eyes blazing with rage. "Let them come," he growled, his voice cutting through the noise of the fight. "They want her? They have to go through me first. And I promise you... not a single one of them will leave here alive." The battle for Sophia had begun. And as Adrian fought, he knew that this was just the first wave. The deeper they dug into her past, the more truths they uncovered, the more dangerous it would become. But he also knew that no matter how dark the shadows grew, no matter how many enemies came for them... he would burn the world down before he let anyone take her away from him again.
