Elizabeth's POV
I silently hoped for my wolf to come out as I sprinted as quickly as my legs would allow, my breath escaping my chest.
Ronan and his friend were chasing me with a couple of other people, and that was the only way I could outrun them.
As I hurried into the night, the forest engulfed me, thorns scratching my arms and branches slapping against my flesh. Weakened by the rejection, Ronan was still trailing, but Thor was gaining ground quickly.
If I ventured to stop or not transform into a wolf, I knew he would catch me quickly.
I pushed myself to continue even though my muscles hurt. I couldn't allow him to prevail. I couldn't allow him to put me in a permanent jail because he was afraid that a rejection he had started would make his wolf weaker.
"I am an Alpha, Elizabeth!" Ronan's words echoed firmly behind me.
"My veins are filled with alpha blood, but yours are not! Are you aware of the extent of your suffering as a wolfless reject?
He spoke sporadically, almost frantically, as if my fate bothered him more than it did me.
He went on, "No wolf will ever want you again." "You won't have a wolf or anything! Are you aware of the benefits of becoming my covert mistress?
I didn't go back or slow down.
I had prepared for this, but suddenly Thor was after me in his wolf form, his thunderous, heavy breaths. I had learned how to survive and run.
I made it more difficult for him to catch me by ducking under low branches, jumping over roots, and swerving through small spaces between trees. Behind me, Ronan continued to yell, using derogatory language like weapons to attempt to weaken my will.
However, I didn't pay attention.
My gaze was fixed on the dense undergrowth up ahead, at the boundary of the area that exuded freedom.
I would finally get away from the pack I had always longed to be away from if I could only blend in with them.
Then I stepped on a secret root. I fell to the ground.
As I stumbled to my feet, anxious to continue racing, I felt a burst of pain, but then something huge struck me.
A wolf.
Before I could even gasp, I was flung abruptly to the side, my back slamming into a tree's rough bark. I was left feeling weak and confused as the blow knocked the breath out of my lungs.
I saw, with distorted vision, Ronan transform back into a human. As he realized there was no way out for me, he walked progressively closer, his confidence returning to his stride.
With a nasty smile on his lips, he teased, "Where do you think you can go from here, Elizabeth?"
He snarled, "You're a wolfless reject." "How can you not follow my instructions to come back?"
He took one step after another.
The distance between us narrowed until it was almost impossible to breathe.
My body jerked as he grabbed for me.
A fierce, guttural roar ripped from my throat. Ronan's eyes widened in terror and he froze abruptly, drawing his hand back. Thor whimpered and retreated, his wolf obviously detecting a problem.
Absolutely incorrect.
As my muscles stretched out of control, agony tore through me. Heat burned like wildfire through my veins, and bones moved.
I was complaining about things that were controlling me and didn't know how to stop it since something inside of me had woken up.
The serenity of the night was ripped apart by a howl that ripped through the sky.
I instinctively raised my head, but when awareness hit me like a punch, my breath stuck in my throat.
I had changed.
A white-silver wolf, not the frail, wolfless omega they all thought me to be, was standing where I had fallen just moments before.
I was frozen in place by shock.
Silver wolves, which were descended from strong lineages that the Moon herself preferred, were emblems of a fortunate Alpha lineage. They were uncommon, respected, and even feared.
Furthermore, I wasn't an Alpha.
I wasn't even near.
My chest wrenched terribly with confusion. I had flowered late. People had made fun of me for not having a wolf. How did I transform into something so strong out of all wolves?
"She should be an omega, right?" Ronan turned to Thor and asked, his voice piercing with incredulity. "How did she get a blessed Alpha wolf all of a sudden?"
Thor remained silent.
He appeared equally astounded.
I didn't hold off till their astonishment subsided.
I took advantage of their sudden bewilderment and flipped over a downed tree, slamming my paws into the earth as I dashed forward once more.
quicker than I've ever experienced. I was driven ahead by instinct as well as fear. I had just shifted into a wolf, and I didn't want to lose control of it.
Ironically, I wasn't having any trouble keeping her under control.
She seemed to be in charge, directing my body, deciding on my course, and propelling me ahead with strength I had never experienced before.
Then my body gave way just as I believed I had finally outrun them.
As soon as I was no longer in direct danger, the white wolf disappeared, and I abruptly changed back into my human shape, falling to the ground. She seemed to have fallen back into slumber and sunk deep inside me of her own volition.
I was even more perplexed by that.
She was supposed to be under my control.
Rather, she had arrived when she felt like it and departed when she did.
I was briefly so engrossed in my thoughts that I neglected to look around or consider the folks who were still pursuing me. The image of the silver-white wolf and the question that kept pounding in my head took over my thoughts.
There was no Alpha ancestry in my father's family. Furthermore, my mother had been an omega, even if he did unintentionally carry such blood by some improbable chance. It is impossible for an omega to give birth to a concealed Alpha.
It was all illogical.
I was abruptly brought back to reality by footsteps.
As I noticed a small cliff close, I felt a wave of fear. I frantically crept down it without thinking, hiding behind a large tree and hoping Ronan wouldn't discover me.
However, fate was cruel.
Thor stopped in front of me and laughed sarcastically when he arrived at the location where I was hiding, his eyes roving over my weak, agitated post-shift body.
He hissed, "So this is all you are."
"You're accompanying me!" he yelled.
Before I could respond, he grabbed my hair harshly and pulled me up violently while turning and pulling me toward Moonstone Pack.
My scalp erupted in pain, and suddenly a voice cut through the darkness.
"Which Moonstone wolf is brave enough to traverse the Rogue Plains?"
Thor suddenly froze at the voice's icy authority.
Ronan looked around abruptly and relaxed his hold.
I followed suit, and when I realized we had passed the invisible border separating the Rogue Lands from Moonstone Pack's domain, my heart sprang with ferocity.
For as long as I could remember, the two countries had been at odds. Nobody entered the other's territory without repercussions.
Shock ran through me as I slowly looked up to see who had spoken.
William, Ronan's uncle, was in front of us.
Decades ago, the man had been exiled from the pack.
Something sank deep in my chest as Ronan and William traded vile glares in the middle of night.
I was aware of it at the time.
I had to get away from my father and the life they had imposed on me if I was to break free from Ronan's hold.
William was the guy I should follow if I wanted to exact revenge for all the wrongs they had done to me.
And the riskiest decision I could make.
