Chapter 13

Elena's POV It's been more than an hour. Time seemed to stand still. I lay on my bed, pretended to sleep, and covered my entire body with a thick blanket. I intentionally turned off my bedroom light earlier, so Grey would think I was asleep. Because sometimes, at night, I hear his footsteps going back and forth in front of my room. I didn't know what he was doing at night. The room I was currently sleeping in was big enough, with a large bed and an open window that allowed me to see the night sky above it. It was dark, but at least the light from the streetlights outside was visible through the curtains hanging by my bed. There was a painting of a dark forest with white mist hung on the wall across from where I lay. I sighed. Why is the clock ticking too slowly tonight? I peeked at the digital clock sitting on the nightstand—ten minutes to midnight. Only ten minutes, but it feels like an eternity. I closed my eyes for a few minutes. When the old antique clock on the first floor chimed twelve times, it woke me up. It was already midnight. I immediately got up. Then I prepare all the things I need for the ritual. I lit the candle, poured the glass of water–I had taken from the kitchen into the cup, then placed the moonstone in the water, and finally sprinkled white rose petals on the water. And last, I started to cast a spell. "One who holds the light of the moon, I call upon you to come forth, Let your presence fill me with peace and joy. I call upon you. I need You to get all the answers to the turmoil of my heart. One who holds the moonlight and the moon's power, please come upon me." I said softly and rapidly and repeatedly. The candles burned steadily so that I could see everything. I looked up at the ceiling. I feel that the moon goddess will come from there. "Come, Lord. Come and illuminate my darkness." Suddenly I felt the wind rustling around me. Slowly, I could feel the presence of light coming from the ceiling, penetrating and shining more and more, brightening the room. My body was surrounded by the glow of the light coming from above and below. It felt Warmer. Stronger. And I realized this is the light that gives people strength in their darkest time of despair. As it moved across the room, the light became brighter and brighter until it filled the entire room, leaving nothing unlit. My hair rose into the air as if alive. And I could no longer hear anything but my voice chanting the words of the spell. "My child," the soft voice echoed throughout the silent room. I saw her floating above me. She has long hair as black as the night sky, which flows freely behind her, and she floats over me slowly and gracefully, her eyes shining bright silver. For a moment, I was mesmerized by her beauty. The way she looks down on me is so loving yet commanding, full of infinite wisdom and understanding. The voice came again. "What did you call me?" she asked warmly. I raised my head, looking into those eyes full of wisdom and serenity. "I wanted to ask you a few things," I said hesitantly. The Moon Goddess smiled and nodded. "Ask, child," She whispered. She seemed to disappear for a moment and reappeared, and her silver eyes shone even brighter. The wind whistled and blew around her, carrying the moonlight. "Is it true that the man who is now my mate is the soul mate you have determined?" I asked stammeringly. My question might sound impolite, but I couldn't help but be curious. If indeed Grey was the mate determined by the Moon Goddes, I should have felt a strong bond. But why am I not feeling it at all? Her silvery eyes twinkled gently. "Child, do you feel a connection to him?" The softness left her voice with a hint of annoyance. "Does Grey not make you feel connected to him ?"She raised her eyebrows. "No, I just felt that he is a stranger to me. I don't feel safe." I confessed honestly. She seemed to understand how that felt. I hope she can tell me about it. She nodded, smiling, showing her beautiful teeth. The moonlight glittered along them like diamonds reflecting light. She paused, and her eyes twinkled again. "Don't worry, child. He will keep you safe." She assured me with conviction. "He loves you and will take good care of you." She smiled encouragingly. "Is there another thing you want to ask?" She asked. Her gentle voice sounded calm once again. She floated toward the edge of the bed and took my hand in hers. And her hair swayed slightly, like the sea waves on the shoreline. "About the stone of life, do you know where it is?" I asked in a hopeful voice. "The stone is in the safest place. Only a pure soul can keep and possess it." "What does that mean?" I raised both my eyebrows. The moon goddess smiled. "My child, do not worry about anything. You are in the right place. Grey is your faithful companion, and you were made for each other." "And how about the stone? Do you know where it is?" "The stone will appear if one of you has understood the meaning of true love." In just a few seconds, the entire room went dark. The candle burning earlier ran out, and the moon goddess disappeared from my sight in the blink of an eye. My pupils were still adjusting to the sudden darkness. It took me two long seconds before I could see anything again. And even then, there was only a dim glow from somewhere in front of me. All around, I saw nothing but pitch blackness. I heard nothing but my rapid breathing. No sound whatsoever. Only my pulse roared through my ears as adrenaline coursed through my body. I got up from where I was sitting, walked over to the bed, and laid myself down. I stared at the room's ceiling, and my mind drifted uncertainly. Despite this unknown, my head was still swirling with thoughts. But soon, my brain became numb as the exhaustion from the day hit me like a hammer. I quickly drifted into unconsciousness. For a while, it was peaceful, as deep sleep consumed me.
