Alex wore a frustrated expression, but Jenny paid him no mind as she entered the bathroom, her soft humming still audible.
After she finished freshening up and changing clothes, she finally stepped out.
Despite Alex's impatience, he couldn't just leave her behind, so he ended up giving her a ride to school.
As they neared Shangde High School, a prestigious institution with vast grounds, the magnificent school gates came into view from afar. From several hundred meters away, Jenny exclaimed, "Stop, stop, stop! Drop me off here."
Alex had no choice but to halt the car, puzzled. "We haven't reached the school yet. Why get off here?"
Jenny, however, had already gotten out of the car, her backpack slung over one shoulder, wearing a smile as she faced him. "I'm not going into the school with you. It's bound to attract attention, and I prefer to keep a low profile. Bye, you go ahead. I'll grab some breakfast before going in."
"Suit yourself," Alex shrugged, not bothered. Many girls would love to be seen riding in his car, showcasing his prestige. This girl, on the other hand, seemed to scorn him.
Alex simply drove away, leaving her alone.
Looking around, Jenny spotted a cake shop. The tantalizing aroma wafted towards her as she walked closer, unable to resist.
The display case was filled with beautifully crafted pastries, making her mouth water. She wanted to try several, but she couldn't possibly buy them all. She hadn't exchanged her currency yet, and the money she had on her was just what she had asked Alex for in the car.
The cakes here weren't cheap; a small piece could cost more than ten dollars. But they were popular, judging by the number of customers. Jenny was practically drooling from the smell, resisting the urge to press her face against the glass.
Finally, she chose her favorite, a strawberry cake, and also ordered a cup of milk tea.
"I'll have this," she pointed to the last remaining slice of strawberry cake.
The server came over, placed the slice in a small box, and packed it up.
Jenny reached out to take it, but the server apologized, "I'm sorry, this one has been reserved. Would you like to choose something else?"
Jenny's cheeks puffed out in frustration. She had taken so long to decide, only to have it snatched away.
"Who reserved it? I saw it first!"
The server was also uncomfortable, gesturing towards a guy standing at the checkout counter. "It's that gentleman. He's already paid for it, so I'm really sorry. Our matcha cake and mango cake are also popular. Would you like to try them?"
"No, thanks!" Jenny declined, walking over to the guy, tapping his shoulder. She noticed he was tall, probably around 180cm, but she was used to seeing such heights abroad, so it didn't faze her.
"Hi, can you give me the strawberry cake?"
Jenny was a bit stubborn. Once she set her sights on something, she didn't want to change. She just wanted to get what she wanted.
To her surprise, the guy turned around, and he was handsome!
He had a handsome and elegant appearance, with intelligent eyes, obviously a top student.
That was the type she liked.
"Hello, do you need something?" Eso looked at her and asked.
His voice was incredibly pleasant, very magnetic, definitely the kind of voice that would make girls' hearts race just by listening to it.
Jenny couldn't help but feel a bit excited; after all, the guy in front of her was so handsome. Well, it's normal for a girl to occasionally gush over someone, right?
"Um... this strawberry cake is the last one, and I really want it. Can you please let me have it? Pretty please?" Jenny acted cute, batting her eyelashes at him with her big, bright eyes.
If Alex were here, witnessing her behavior, he would surely roll his eyes in exasperation.
However, Eso remained unmoved, apologizing, "I'm sorry, but this is reserved for someone else, so I can't give it to you."
Jenny's expression immediately fell like a deflated balloon. She was convinced that he must have bought it for his girlfriend. Such thoughtfulness towards his girlfriend and buying breakfast for her were rare traits in a guy.
Although rejected, he scored points in her book.
"Okay... I won't force it. I'll get something else."
Feeling a bit down that the cute guy already had a girlfriend, Jenny sighed multiple times, dragging her feet to the glass counter.
Eso's gaze followed her, perhaps feeling a bit guilty, he couldn't help but suggest, "I heard our chestnut cake is also good. Would you like to try it?"
Jenny felt even more touched by his kindness.
"Sure, I'll give it a try!" She smiled at him.
Then she ordered a slice of chestnut cake, took it with her, and caught up to him with a few quick steps.
Even though he had a girlfriend, making friends with a top student after just transferring to this school wasn't a bad idea. So, she plucked up the courage to strike up a conversation with him.
"Hi!" Jenny greeted cheerfully, her smile as bright as a sunflower. "Are you also a Savvy student? I just transferred here today."
Eso glanced at her, facing her innocent smile, it was hard for anyone to refuse her.
"Yes," he replied softly.
Jenny matched her pace with his, asking, "What year are you in?"
"Junior year."
Jenny felt a bit regretful, pouting, "I should be a sophomore... well, I definitely can't be a junior."
"Should be?" Eso looked puzzled. "You don't even know which year of college you're in?"
Jenny scratched her head in embarrassment. "Actually, I transferred back from the UK. I spent my freshman year there, but I think I'm pretty smart, so Mrs. Yin should arrange for me to be a sophomore."
Because she knew Alex was a sophomore. Mrs. Yin would probably arrange for them to be in the same class to foster their relationship.
Although she spent her freshman year in the UK, she believed she could handle American academics just fine.
Eso looked at her confident expression and couldn't help but smile, "It's hard to say. The education systems in the UK and the US are different. Don't underestimate the standards here."
As they chatted, they reached the school gate, but Jenny was stopped.
"You can't go in. It's almost time for class, and outsiders aren't allowed on campus."
Jenny widened her eyes and said to the guard at the gate, "I'm a student here! I just transferred today!"
But no matter how she explained, the guard refused to let her pass. Instead, he grew more suspicious of her, which left her feeling frustrated.
