Chapter 2

Talia Everhart POV “Mommy, where is daddy?” Ethan's five-year-old voice cut the silence between us. I let out a sigh, my shoulders dropping. I squatted to his level, caressing his cheeks, “I told you, Ethan, he had traveled and would soon be back.” I half smiled, but he remained cold. “You always say that. And yet Daddy never returns. My friends tease me because I am the only person without a father,” he half yelled, running back to his room. A tap on my shoulders jolted me out of my thoughts, bringing me back to reality. “Are you here for the interview?” A woman dressed in a corporate outfit said. I nodded, straightening my posture, fumbling with the card Dr Wade had given me. “I am. Dr Wade sent me.” I chipped in. After I narrated how I got fired, and still needed money to cater for myself, my mom, and my son. He gave me a business card for a company that needed a cleaner. I had no option but to grab the opportunity. Mom's health was deteriorating fast, and her medicines were getting quite expensive, coupled with Ethan's immediate operations. My hands are tied. “Why are you crying? Is something wrong?” The woman voiced empathetically. “Crying?” I wiped the stray tear off my face. “I'm fine, it's nothing,” I smiled. “Alright then, this way,” She gestured into the building. The company was huge, the skyscrapers were huge. I researched it and found out it was a tech company. They produced a series of websites and software that we use daily. I also found out that the CEO of the company built it from scratch without his billionaire parents. “Pretty impressive,” I said. The building was nothing I had ever entered. It held luxury, elegance, and sophistication all at once. Everyone dressed and walked like they belonged there, except me. I looked out of place. I wore a shabby green gown, which I had thrifted. It was all my money could buy. My shoes were also worn out. Camila, the secretary, led me to an elevator where I would be interviewed. As we began entering the elevator, a woman dressed in a very tight dress, her skin olive and her wavy, long blonde hair gracefully swaying with the wind, stepped out. Suddenly, she lifted her eyes, and I raised my gaze at her. Our eyes locked “What the hell is she doing here?” I averted my eyes immediately, but it was no use; she had already seen me. “Hold on,” her melodic voice called out. Camilla and I stopped, and my head was still facing down. “You, look at me,” she ordered, and I hesitantly raised my head to her. “There's no doubt. That is Skyler,” I panicked internally, biting my lips and fidgeting with my fingers. Skyler squinted her eyes and catwalked to me, “I have seen you somewhere.” Her bratty voice always irritates me, and she hasn't changed a bit. “I am sorry, ma'am, I just came….” But she rudely cut me off. “Talia?” “She remembers who I am,” I muttered beneath my breath. She clicked her fingers, “Yeah, you're Talia, the b***h that almost stole from my man.” She hissed, “You have some nerves showing yourself here. Don't you feel ashamed?” “I never stole anything from you, and besides, I never…” she cut me off again, her hand in the air. “I don't want to hear anything from you. What are you doing here, to finish what you started and steal my man from me?” She began, raising her voice, attracting attention from others. “You should be rotting in jail. Security!” she yelled. I rushed over to her, “Please, don't call the security. I never thought of stealing anything from you,” I pleaded, hoping she would listen. But Skyler, being Skyler, turned a deaf ear. She pushed my hands off her. “Don't touch me with those filthy hands.” “You don't understand, I need to work. I'll do anything at all,” I pleaded. “Why should I listen to you? You're nothing but a selfish girl who goes around sleeping with men and snatching them.” She barked at me. “I don't sleep around!” I defended myself. “Then why are you here?” She crossed her arms. I breathed out as silence took over the hallway, “My mother is sick and needs medication.” Immediately, pain erupted in my cheeks. I held where the pain came from and stared at Skyler. “You lying wh!re. Get her out of here.” Two hefty men grabbed my arms and began pulling me away while I thrashed around. “Let me go,” I tossed around. “What the hell is going on here?” A male voice cut across the chaos, instilling fear in everyone. I couldn't see him clearly; the security man blocked my vision. My behind me, the other in front of me. “Honey, it's nothing,” I heard Skyler's voice. “Then what was the shouting about?” The strange man asked. “I told you to stop causing a nuisance in the office.” “There was this crazy woman who insisted that she wanted to work here, but I know she's here to steal,” Skyler said. 'Babe, let's just go in. I was coming to meet…” The man cut her. “And where is she?” The man asked firmly. “Why worry about her? " I told her. There's nothing to worry….” The man chipped in, stopping her mid-sentence again. “I said, " Where is she?” He demanded authoritatively. In all the chaos, I can't help but ponder on his voice; it sounded so familiar — close. Skyler cleared her throat, “The security has her.” “Move out of the way,” he ordered, and slowly, the man obstructing my view suddenly shifted. It felt as if time stood still as I stared at the man. His hair sleek at the back, his jaw perfect, and those icy blue eyes. My heart thumped rapidly, loudly, like the first day he told me those words. “I love you.” I froze as he matched up to me. “Allen?” the father of my son.
