The following morning, Sarah roused herself at the ungodly hour of 4:00 AM to see her men off. After she watched the climbers stream out into the dark twilight of morning, she closed her eyes and sent a prayer upward to bring them back safe and unharmed. But the hike to Camp 3 would be no picnic, or so her son had told her. It would take them all day and into the early part of the evening before they reached the camp stationed on the steep slope of the mountain. She turned away from the fading stream of lights heading for the sheet of ice somewhere in the gloom and struck for the Command tent.
