CHAPTER SIX: THE TENSION.

745 Words
It had been a few days since Sophia started working at the company. She focused more on her work, trying not to make mistakes. She had become more serious than ever, careful not to fall into any trouble with Adrian. But it wasn’t easy. Working in the same place with the man she once loved… It was harder than she expected. Adrian walked into his office early that morning and called his assistant. “Esther.” “Yes, sir,” she replied. “Send Sophia in.” “Okay, sir.” A few moments later, Sophia stepped into his office. Adrian didn’t even look at her. “Take these files,” he said coldly. “I want them completed within twenty-four hours.” Sophia’s eyes widened. “But sir… it’s too much for one person to handle.” Adrian finally looked up at her. “You don’t tell me how to run my company.” His voice was calm… but firm. Sophia’s hands trembled slightly. “Oh God… what have I gotten myself into?” she muttered under her breath. “What did you say?” Adrian asked. “Nothing, sir,” she replied quickly. “I’ll get to work.” “Good. And don’t make any mistakes.” Sophia left and went straight to her desk. Not long after, her phone rang. It was Lily and Emma. “How are you?” they asked. “I’m fine,” Sophia said. “It’s been a while! Tell us what’s going on,” Emma said. “I got a job,” Sophia said. “That’s amazing!” they both shouted. Sophia hesitated. “It didn’t end there…” “What do you mean?” Lily asked. Sophia took a breath. “Adrian owns the company.” “What?!” they both screamed. “Yes… and he’s making things really difficult for me.” Emma sighed. “Maybe he’s still hurt… or maybe he just wants you close.” Sophia shook her head. “I don’t know… but I have to go. Talk later.” Sophia worked all day and all night to complete the task. The next morning, she walked into Adrian’s office and placed the files on his desk. Adrian glanced through them briefly. Then he dropped them. “What is this?” he said. Sophia froze. “I worked all night on it—” “This is not good enough,” he cut in. “Redo it.” Sophia’s voice shook. “But sir—” “Did you just call me by my name ?” Adrian asked suddenly. Sophia lowered her eyes. “Sorry… sir.” “Then act like it.” Sophia walked out quietly, her chest heavy. She felt hurt… and tired. But she said nothing. Inside his office, Adrian leaned back in his chair. He closed his eyes for a moment. Then slowly… he looked toward the glass wall. He could see Sophia at her desk. Working quietly. He watched her longer than he should have. Because deep down… He still cared. Later that day, Vanessa walked into his office confidently. “Hi, Adrian,” she said with a smile. “How are you?” She moved closer and lightly touched his arm. “You’ve been working too hard.” Adrian gave a small nod. “I’m fine.” Just then, Sophia entered the office. She stopped. Her eyes moved from Adrian… to Vanessa. “I’m sorry,” she said quickly, then turned and left. Something about the moment made her uncomfortable. The next day… Adrian stepped out of his office and saw Sophia outside with Daniel. They were talking. Laughing. For a moment, Adrian stood still. His jaw tightened. His expression darkened. “So… she’s happy,” he thought. Without saying anything, he turned and walked away. Later, Adrian called Sophia into his office. “You seem… comfortable with him,” he said. Sophia frowned. “With who?” “The guy,” Adrian replied. “Oh… Daniel?” she said. “He’s just a friend.” She turned to leave. But Adrian spoke again. “You moved on quickly.” Sophia stopped. Her chest tightened. “You don’t get to say that,” she replied softly. Then she walked out. The next day, Adrian gave her another difficult task. Sophia looked exhausted. “But sir, this is too much—” “Focus on your work, Miss Blake,” Adrian said coldly. Then he walked away.
