Finally, after what felt like a lifetime, he said, “What are your conditions?”
I studied his face. He was humoring me, was not he? The blankness in his expression was calculated.
Still, I answered. “I only have three requests.”
He waved me on.
“First: I want to go home. I need to see my family and reassure them I am alive and well, before returning here,” I told him. “I have seen the posters and news pamphlets, they are looking for me.”
Not waiting, I continued. “Second: I will not entertain Jolan Kolls. He must never be a customer of mine. Not for any reason. And lastly: I do not want to be induced into heat. No matter how much gold is offered, I will not do it.”
I drew a breath. “That is it. Just those three conditions and I will work for you, willingly.”
