Mystery in Crimson University (The Unsettled Maybes)

Winter

Officer Montalban is now talking to Lester Albert in the interrogation room, we are silently observing and listening to them as from where we are right now. From the interrogation room and to this room where we are, are connected by a one-way mirror.

"Can I talk to him?" I asked Inspector who’s too focus listening to the conversation at the other room while his both hands are in his pockets. The usual Inspector as always.

"Go ahead!" he said without facing me. He was too preoccupied observing Lester’s movement as if he is was analyzing Lester’s words matches his body language.

After I satisfied myself observing Inspector Rowan observing, I turned to the other side of the mirror and saw Lester restless with his uniform open revealing his shirt beneath it. “what motives can you think of why did your roommate committed suicide?” ask Officer Montalban. Lester lifted his arms and put lean on the table as he brushed his face with his hands out of frustration.

“I don’t know” he said with emphasize on every word he said that seems like he is holding his anger.

“Maybe I should go with you” EU suggested and I nodded, agreeing with his suggestion.

“Johan was a jolly person, he’s afraid of hurting himself! This is not a suicide!” Lester said as he burst out his frustration from the death of his friend.

“We are also looking at that perspective, Mr. Albert” the Officer reminded Lester.

“Once I know who did this to my friend…, I swear, he’ll regret that he ever live” Lester murmured. Like EU told us, he was with Lester the other night, and that alibi will remove him from the equation.

“It will be much better if you’ll not come Mr. Peters” EU and I faced inspector as he utters those words. “And why is it so?” by the sound how EU asked Inspector, he really dislikes the idea.

“You are his alibi, and it will only start confusion to the case if you two will meet today during an investigation” but EU seems like to be more dismay with what he heard. Before EU can respond with what Inspector said, I stopped him.

“Leave it up to me, EU”. I calmly said

"Can I go now?" I asked as I saw the two inside finished talking with each other.

“There is someone who wants to ask a few questions” Officer Montalban picks up his pen and notebook he used and about to leave the interrogation room.

As he left the room, I also start walking towards to the interrogation. Officer Montalban didn’t say any words to me as we switch places. I gently open the door and saw Lester’s reaction shifted. He looks calmer and seems to know me.

“You’re a campus police now?” he seems shocked by the way he asked me. I walk towards the table, and pull the chair in front of Lester and sat where officer Montalban sat earlier.

“You dreamt of being police huh?”

"Detective!" I corrected and he nodded mesmerize.

"I just have a few questions then inspector Rowan will talk to you or will let you go." he didn’t answer and seems waiting for my next question.

“Does Johan usually set his alarm?” I ask him. I saw his face forming a stunned look from my question.

"Is this serious?" he said while grinning. I didn’t smile or anything, if he thinks I’m joking then he is wrong cause I am dead serious with this one. I know it was an absurd question but that was I really want to know. 

"No!" I waited for more of his answer. 

“He never sets his alarm; I never once knew him setting up an alarm. He can wake up by his own, like he has his own body clock. He can manage himself even without an alarm” he response

“How long was your cabinet broken?” he leans towards the table making his face close to mine. I lean to my chair to get some more distance from him.

“It was not broken yesterday before I left” he answered shortly.

“Does he drink tea? Or do you two had some tea before you left yesterday?” he leaned back to his chair.

“No. Do I look like I drink tea to you?” he answers bluntly. I stand up and walk closely to the door.

"We're done!" I said before leaving the room. 

I saw Inspector Rowan after I left the interrogation room. I thought he will just walk through us like officer did but he called me. I stop and face him.

“Go to your classes today. Let’s meet later at the admin” he said before entering the interrogation room. EU walk to me and did not bother to wait for me to fetch him.

I was quiet the whole day, and EU thought there is something wrong with me. But I was just only thinking all the possibilities in Johan’s death. Like what Lester said, Johan was afraid of hurting himself but why did the victim hung himself. He can end his life by drinking a poison or overdosing with drugs if he really wants to. But why hung himself if he knew it would be a torture to death.

It is possible that someone he knew went to him yesterday. Both drank some tea with which the suspect brought himself. Maybe the tea was drugged. Then he set up the rope and put the rope on Johan’s neck and put him over the cabinet. The culprit may have set an alarm to awaken Johan and as a normal human reflex he will reach for his phone and try to shut it off but he falls and hung himself that cause his death. But the culprit didn’t expect that Johan will knock down the door of the victim cabinet.

"Winter!" I got back to my senses with the way EU called me.

"Are you okay?" he asked worriedly

"I’m okay!" I said while still putting myself together after I spaced out. 

“Your food is getting cold” he said. I was preoccupied that I forgot about the food.  After this we will be at the admin office to report that we are part of the campus police.
