Chapter 23 Weber was just coming out of the captain’s office as Walker slid off his jacket and set it around the back of his chair. He glanced over to Kruso, whose red hair was sticking up at the back as if she’d gone to bed with it wet. Her nose was stuck in a file, reading. “How’s your girlfriend?” She didn’t even look up as she turned a page, resting her chin on her hand. “Kate’s fine.” It was so new, having anyone ask and point out who Kate was to him. Of course it felt weird, but he realized he didn’t have that choking feeling that made him want to reach up and pull at his collar. No, there was an odd sense of amusement at having Kate, her spunk, her attitude, her fire, everything about her, belong to him. He realized Kruso was watching him with a smug expression. “What?” he added.
