Chapter 22 : Web of Lies Pt 2

The minute Heather had left, Grace knew something was absolutely wrong. The awkwardness was nothing like her at all.

The picture of her and "her" cat that she sent cemented her earlier thoughts.

That was Serendipity. She had raised her herself and could point her out in a crowd of similar-looking cats.

Did Heather truly dislike the other lawyer and feel uncomfortable or was she missing something?

Derrick had not said anything about the interaction but had continued drinking while lost in thought.

The night had ended way earlier than she had expected as Derrick soon after asked to be excused, citing that he felt exhausted after the day's events.Not one to argue, Grace had let him go though disappointed. She had been excited about both of them meeting that she had not factored in the probability of them not liking each other. She had wanted Heather to like Derrick, her approval meaning so much to her. Now she would also need to hold out on the information that she was interested in him.

Finding out the close relationship between her cousin and her boss had seemed like the worst thing, but now Grace found it useful as she texted Kingsley to find out if Heather was at his place.

Kingsley had confirmed she was present and actually spending the night but all her efforts to find out why she had sought him out were all in vain. Her cousin remained tight-lipped and even stopped answering her questions in the process.

She debated between confronting Heather or letting her come clean about that night on her own, but remained undecided . Everything about that evening had felt off but she couldn't put a finger on what exactly it was.

As Derrick had driven home that evening he regretted having dragged Grace into his scheme. Now she had been left confused at a bar with no explanation of what had happened. In as much as he was guilty, he was happy. Now he no longer had to make appearances with Grace. He liked her, but not as much as she did him.

As he drove home, he sent two texts. One to Heather to apologise once again for what had happened. He had no idea about that night. The other to Estella. He knew Heather was allergic to cats, but whomever she had been on the phone with had been a male as he had struggled to keenly pick out their conversation despite the noisiness of the bar.

Is Heather seeing someone? Derrick

Why do you ask ? Estella

She spoke to someone about her cat escaping when we were out together before bailing. Derrick

Seeing someone's cat is a new euphemism for s**x so maybe it's that. And what do you mean together? Estella

He went on to explain what had happened, purposefully omitting the fact that he had approached Grace with every intention of getting to Heather.

You can rest assured. It could have been a scheduled booty call, for all you know. As long as it's not in the tabloids, she is not dating anyone. Estella.

Derrick did not want to believe it but everything pointed to that but that did not make him feel any better.
