Trembling with pain, Rue pulled her human body onto the window sill and dragged herself in. The metallic scent of her blood filled the room as she collapsed to the floor. Each movement sent a lightning bolt of agony through her battered body. Rue could feel the wounds were deep and knew it would take days, if not weeks, for them to heal completely. She never had the fastest recovery rate.
As she crawled toward the bathroom, she noticed Heath standing in the corner of her chamber. His dark eyes burned into her like a raging fire, both angry and dangerous. After a long three seconds, he rushed toward her and knelt by her side. Cupping her chin in his big hand, he forced her to look him in the eyes. 'What happened to you?' he asked sternly.
Rue didn’t even try to answer, as moving her mouth and chest hurt like h.ell. Without a second thought, Heath picked her up in his arms, like she was a baby. Her little body seemed to weigh next to nothing, as he carried her to her bathroom. There, he put her down in the tub, and turned on the water. Her wounds needed to be rinsed, for them to heal faster. The more dirt and hair there was stuck in the wounds, the longer it would take to heal.
The water hurt at first. But quickly, the pain became numbing, and she allowed herself to be sedated by the lukewarm water. Without asking for permission, he dipped his hands into the water, and started brushing her body, trying to clean any wounds he could find.
‘I heard Nadine tell your parents that you refused to get out of bed, due to your sadness over not being my fated mate,’ he started, explaining to her why he was in her room in the first place. His eyes lingered on her body, as the water was quickly starting to turn red. ‘I wanted to see how you were doing…’
Rue moaned as he found a deeper wound under her ribcage. She let herself sink deeper into the water, trying to ignore the pain as he touched her flesh.
‘Imagine my surprise to see your bed was empty,’ he continued, while trying to distract her. ‘I decided to stay put, until you returned. To ask for an explanation, as to why you were so heartbroken even though you asked me for time yourself.’ His gaze lingered on her body as he spoke, but he was only trying to protect her. As he brushed her n*****s with the back of his hand, he noticed her tense up with lust. 'What happened to you?' he asked, after he pulled his gaze from her breasts and looked into her eyes.
‘Wolves,’ she coughed. ‘At least five, maybe even more.’
He flexed his muscles, and practically growled when she asked: ‘In my territory?’ Emphasizing my.
She shook her head, and noticed his muscles almost instantly relaxing slightly. ‘No, I left the territory myself,’ she explained. ‘Naya was heading towards something- I do not know what. I doubt she even knew herself. We were enjoying the freedom of the run so much… I did not even take the time to realize where we were heading. Never in a million years, would I expect enemy territory so close to home. They were…’ her voice cracked. ‘They were going to tear me apart, Heath… Alpha. I was only just in time, thanks to my wolf… She’s so agile. So fast.’
She noticed the corners of his mouth move, creating a slight smirk on his face. ‘Your wolf is beautiful,’ he twisted her words, before he continued cleaning her again. He could barely even see her body anymore, due to the amount of blood that turned the water red.
‘They stopped exactly at the border of our territory,’ she continued, ignoring his compliment. ‘They must have been afraid of you.’
‘They better,’ he hissed angrily. He bent towards her, and sniffed her hair, while trying to smell any scent of the intruders. ‘It’s unknown. I will patrol the borders tonight, to see if I can find any trace that smells familiar. Which territory do you think they came from?’
Rue explained the way she ran. ‘McClawly’s forest?’ Heath summarized her direction. ‘But that makes no sense. McClawly’s pack barely has any big wolves. Besides, the McClawly’s are basically our allies. If any of my wolves crossed their territory without asking first, the most they would do is send you a warning. Or knock on my door angrily the next day. They would never try to rip you apart.’ He sank into thought, as he was still staring at her body, unaware. Without realising, he took his fingers up, and rested them on her neck. Right where he wanted to mark her earlier that night.
‘You’re clean,’ he coughed, the moment he realised what he had done. He stood up, and dried his hands by wiping the bloody water on his sweatpants.
‘Do you know Rue, what could have protected you today?’
She raised her eyebrows and frowned. A possessive look appeared on his face, and his eyes glowed a slight red.
‘My mark.’ He turned away from her, and strode out of the bathroom.
