The moment Elijah showed up at my doorstep, my wolf wouldn't stop whispering in my head, "Let him leave; he is not our mate; let him leave, he is not."
It sounded strange as ever.
"Can you just shut up?" I said, my voice under my breath and barely above a whisper.
I didn't know if it was right for him to be here---after three years, he just showed up like nothing.
Eventually, he left. But I didn't know what came over me. Maybe I did, maybe something possessed me.
I shifted into my wolf form and ran. I journeyed all the way to Justin's house. I didn't even know what I was up to until I stood at his gate.
"Wait… what am I doing here?" I slurred my words, hoping for a calm reply from any wolf nearby or within me.
Then my wolf spoke again from within. "Don't give up now. We're getting our mate tonight."
I gulped down nothing and walked in. I didn't know why I always listened to her; I couldn't help it.
I didn't get to a distance before I was able to see him. And then, my heart rang a bell instantly.
His face reddened, and the way he looked at me---like I was something filthy he had stepped on---made me regret coming instantly.
I knew I wasn't the one he expected there at all. After all, he had already rejected me.
He dipped his hands into his pockets, with nothing to say about his face, "What are you doing here?"
"I...came..." I stammered.
He scoffed---and then turned straight to his guards. "Throw her out."
I didn't know where the surge of courage came from, as I snapped, "I am your mate! Whether you like it or not, I remain your mate Luna!"
He didn't flinch; he just stood there like my words meant nothing.
Then he walked up to me, slowly, his eyes never leaving mine. When he was close enough I perceived his cologne.
He smirked, "If the Moon Goddess really paired me with you," he said. "Then maybe she made a mistake or maybe she just has a twisted sense of humor,"
My breath hitched. "Hmm…" was what escaped out of my mouth.
Later, he stepped back, hands still in his pocket, and added with a scoff, "I already concluded that you're nothing but a pathetic, clingy little mutt still chasing a dream that died three years ago."
The words hit harder than a slap, I let out a breath that I didn't know that I was holding. Another "Hmm…" again.
His eyes darkened, "Come near me again, and I won't just throw you out. It'll tear through your entire pack and every damn thing that keeps you breathing and leaves nothing but ash."
A shock crossed through me, and I glanced over at Elijah standing far away from the both of us.
Elija's jaw dropped, and he looked at me, shaking his head. I hated the fact that he looked at me with such a bad face, and I looked back at Justin. "You don't want to test how far I'd go to remove a mistake," he snapped angrily.
I turned backward staggering as my legs made a noise, tears streaming down my eyes before I could stop them.
I bit my lip, trying to hold back, but my wolf whispered from inside me.
I turned back immediately, running out of the mansion. Once I was far enough, my legs gave out beneath me, and I stumbled to the ground sobbing.
I tried to speak to my wolf--- but she wouldn't respond. Not even now, when I needed her the most.
"I am a mistake," his words echoed in my head.
Tears streamed down my face, he hates me. I had just embarrassed myself in front of him the second time.
"I can't face anyone again," I whispered, choking on my breath. "I should run away."
I nodded to myself, "Yes... I should run away, where no one knows me."
I stood up and started walking aimlessly. I, I kept going for over thirty minutes, but I was tired, and it was getting late.
"Ahh!" I yelped, stumbling as I hit my toe against a stone, and blood oozed from my toes. I crouched in pain, grabbing my foot, when suddenly I heard voices.
I took off, limping as fast as I could, even though my wolf still wouldn't respond.
But as I ran, someone grabbed me from behind.
"Let me go!" I screamed, struggling without even looking up.
And then---he let go.
What are you doing out here alone? Do you want a death wish," he threatened me.
I recognized that voice immediately, and slowly I lifted my head, "Dad?"
On returning to the Bloodfang estate with my father, I knew I was in deep trouble.
To put it mildly, he was a strict Alpha. Being the kind of person known and respected by the pack, anything short of loyalty from his daughter would be considered betrayal on a much higher scale.
I sat there quietly with my heart hammering.
"Are you deaf? Am I not talking to you?" He barked.
I flinched at his furious tone. "Dad. I wasn't trying to run away. I-I--"
"Then what were you doing?" he growled. "I heard your mate rejected you three years ago and you didn't think to tell me? Did you really think I wouldn't find out? You went back to him today, didn't you? And he Again, rejected you? What kind of daughter are you?" The anger on his brow deepened, and the darkness in his eyes deepened. "How many times have I told you-you are the daughter of the Alpha King in Bloodfang, and you have dared try to run away?"
I clasped my hands. "I...I feel so sorry, Dad."
Suddenly he placed his palm on the table and banged it. "Sorry? Sorry? That's going to make everything alright?”
"Just accept me…" I cried, my face painted with sheer disappointment in myself.
"Only that one small thing I asked if you---you couldn't even do it!" He breathed again, violently rebuking me. "Didn't I make myself clear enough?"
Swallowing hard, I felt tears slip down my
cheeks, "Have you ever even thought about how I feel?" I asked him gently, but painfully deep down.
