CHAPTER TWO Sophie’s POV I rushed over to the hospital where I presumed Alex must have taken her to and met him pacing up and down anxiously in the front of a room. I walked up to him from behind, fighting the urge to cry, and asked, my voice breaking “Who is she, Alex? Is she really carrying your child? Please tell me this isn't true” I finally let the tears freely pour down my face. “So, you've been cheating on me all this time. You even made that lying b***h pregnant!!” In a sudden whirlwind of motion, he spun around and, without a moment's pause, struck me fiercely across the face. The jolt sent me crashing to the ground, my hands instinctively flying to my burning cheeks. Dazed and disoriented, I stared up at him in disbelief. Alex had never raised a hand against me before, yet in this shocking moment, he acted without a trace of hesitation. And why? Because of another woman? I was still reeling from the aftershock when he raised his voice again, making me flinch. “You have such a malicious heart Sophie, why on earth would you push a pregnant woman? If anything happens to Cath, I’ll make you pay with your life”. Cath….he called her such an intimate name. My heart clenched painfully in my chest. Wiping the blood stain from my busted lip as a result of his slap earlier, I muttered weakly, “So…she’s really carrying your child”. He turned away, and a brief flicker of emotion crossed his face before he masked it with his usual cold demeanor. Regret. Frustration. Guilt. I covered my cheeks, still feeling the impact of the violence I'd just endured. No one, not even my father, had ever hit me before. The shock brought tears to my eyes, and despite my efforts, I couldn't hold them back. Just as I was waiting for him to respond, the operating room opened and a doctor stepped out. Alex immediately rushed to his side, worry plastered on his features. “How is she doing? Is the baby okay?” I struggled to move closer, hoping to catch whatever the doctor wanted to say. He sighed, adjusting his mask, he said “The patient has been diagnosed with Leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant within six months”. He hesitated for a moment, as if considering his next words "However, the hospital currently does not have a compatible match available." I was caught in a mix of emotions—unsure whether to feel happy, sad, or perhaps both. However, my delusions were abruptly shattered when I was yanked upright, and the next words he uttered sent my knees buckling beneath me. “She is a match, there’s no need to test, just extract it. It doesn't matter how much is drawn, as long as Cath is okay”. At this point, it felt as if a weight was pressing down on my heart, making it harder to breathe. I sharply turned to look at Alex “What are you talking about? How could I possibly match her?”. Alex suddenly grabbed my jaw, forcing me to look up “What do you think I married you for? Catherine has my child and I need her alive. I've already checked and you both have matching bone marrow”. Tears spilled down my cheeks, hot and fast. “Alex please…you are breaking me”. He coldly reinstated his claim “I married you to save Cath’s life and you are going to do just that”. With a sudden shove, he sent me stumbling backward, and I fought desperately to regain my balance. My voice pierced the tension as I exclaimed. “I want a divorce this instant!” Each word was charged with a mix of anger and desperation, echoing the turmoil swirling around us. His response was a cold laugh “Remember that the Whitmore Corporation and even the house where your father lives are now in my hands….” Taking a step forward and looking straight into my eyes “You better do what you are told otherwise, I’ll make sure your father is better off on the streets”. I grabbed his hands and pleaded desperately “Please Alex, for the sake of what we had, let me go. Don't do this”. He yanked his hand away from my grasp as though my touch burned him. Then with a cold look in his eyes, he waved his hand and the nurses grabbed me and started to drag me out. —————- I felt something dripping on my face and when I groggily opened my eyes, the strong smell of antiseptic made me wrinkle my nose. I was still at the hospital and from the looks of it, I fainted while those nurses were dragging me in. This hospital was owned by the Russo family, so it made sense why nurses would gang up against an innocent person. As my eyes adjusted to the bright light, I made out two silhouettes standing right in front of me, one with a cup in hand. Alex and the reason why I'm lying on this hospital bed - Catherine. Part of her face was still covered by a white veil and I wondered if it was just a twisted sense of fashion or something deeper… She stood there looking all pure and innocent like she didn't just ruin someone’s marriage. It seemed like the dampness I felt earlier was caused by Alex, judging from the cup in his right hand. Frowning, I made to face the other side of the bed when I felt another stinging slap right across my left cheek. Followed by a dramatic gasp. My head moved sideways from the impact. I gripped my cheek and turned to look at him in shock. “You heartless witch, you caused Catherine’s miscarriage!” The lady in question rushed to my side, with a sickening sweet voice, she purred. “Oh my goodness, Sophie are you okay. I'm so sorry about that” Then with a frown etched on her face, she turned towards Alex. Eyes turning glassy from tears which only made her look adorable. “Alex, I told you it wasn't her intention to push me. Maybe her hand slipped or something. Besides, when did you turn into a woman beater?” Of course, I understood her intentions clearly. She was trying to let me know that Alex has never laid a hand on her. He softly pulled her into a hug, tenderly caressing her back. “It's just because you are too kind Cath, she deserves everything that’s coming her way. I’ll make sure of that” I lay there, watching as my husband got intimate with another woman while I only suffered violence. “Now go rest okay, let me take things from here” As Catherine nodded and headed towards the exit, I can swear, I saw her give me a smug smile. That pretentious two-faced b***h. Good thing she had a miscarriage. I inwardly smirked, serves her right. Now Alex won't have any more reason to be with her. Just as I was inwardly rejoicing, Alex grabbed my neck, cutting short my source of oxygen and extinguishing any flicker of hope I held onto for both of us. I clawed at his hands, finding it difficult to breathe but they wouldn't budge. “That was my first child with Catherine and also the last one. The doctor said she can't conceive again! Do you know what that means?!” I could clearly see the hatred in his eyes and I wondered if love could be faked. He really did a good job at hiding his true feelings. “I won't let you off so easily!!”. Each of his words came out louder than the last.
