Chapter 7: The Distance Word count: ~1500 After the storm clears, Emma distances herself from Luke, hurt by his rejection. Luke, too, withdraws, feeling guilty for not being able to let go of his past. As the days pass, both of them focus on their art—Emma working on a new painting, Luke on his writing—yet they can't shake the thought of each other. Emma decides to leave the town to get some space and clear her mind. Just before she leaves, Luke unexpectedly shows up at her door with a letter—his first real attempt to open up to her. In the letter, he explains his reasons for pulling away and admits that he’s been afraid to love again. Emma is touched by his words, but the letter also leaves her with more doubts about their future.
