--- Chapter Nine: Cracks in the Quiet It wasn’t supposed to happen. They weren’t even supposed to be together that afternoon. Jude had skipped class—again—and Mira had apparently skipped on purpose. She found him behind the old gym building, sitting on the steps with his hoodie up, hood tight around his face. “You’re bad at hiding,” she said, dropping her bag beside him. “I’m not hiding,” he muttered. She raised an eyebrow. “Right. Just meditating in a hoodie like a monk in witness protection.” He snorted. Just a little. Mira grinned and sat beside him without asking. They sat in silence for a few minutes, listening to the wind scrape leaves across the pavement. And then, for reasons he couldn’t explain, Jude spoke. “I used to count my birthdays like expiration dates,” he said suddenly. “Not candles. Just… countdowns.” Mira didn’t speak. Didn’t interrupt. She only listened. “Doctors said I wouldn’t make it past twenty. That was when I was five. It’s like I’ve been waiting to die my whole life. So I stopped trying to live.” His voice cracked a little, and he hated that. Hated how she was seeing him like this. Unfiltered. But she didn’t flinch. Instead, she leaned back and looked up at the sky. “You ever notice how the sky never looks the same twice?” she said softly. “Even when it’s cloudy. Still new. Still there.” He looked at her, eyebrows drawn. “I’m just saying,” she continued, “maybe we’re all waiting for something to end when it’s really just... changing shape.” Jude didn’t answer. Not with words. But for the first time, he didn’t pull away. They sat there until the sun dipped behind the trees, and he didn’t try to leave. Not because he was better. Not because he believed in miracles. But because for once, the silence between them didn’t feel like dying. It felt like breathing. ---
