Collins' POV
As I slid into my car, I didn’t start the engine. Instead, I sat there, hands resting on the wheel, head bowed. The silence inside the vehicle pressed against me. My mind wasn’t focused on driving. It was planning, calculating, how I could steer tonight’s conversation with Nora, and how to finally uncover the truth behind her stubborn singleness.
But then... another thought slipped in.
What if this isn’t just about the mission?
What if I actually end up falling for her, or worse, marrying her?
I leaned back, resting my head on the steering wheel, eyes closed. “She’s beautiful,” I muttered to myself. Too beautiful.
A knock on the window startled me.
“Sir? Is everything alright?” the gateman asked, peering into the car with concern.
I straightened quickly, flashing a quick smile. “Yes, yes, I’m fine. Just... thinking.”
Without another word, I turned the ignition and drove off, trying to leave my tangled thoughts behind, but they clung to me like shadows.
Later That Evening
Nora arrived home at exactly six. She didn't hear Rachel's greetings as she hurried up the staircase, heels clicking with purpose. Time was short, she was meeting Collins by seven.
Inside her room, she moved with speed but grace. Her bedroom lit up with warm light as she sat before the mirror, brushing a soft layer of makeup over her already glowing skin.
Rachel, her assistant, peeked in. “Miss Nora, you seem happy… and in quite a rush. Are you going out again?”
Nora gave a soft smile, focused on her reflection. “Yes, Rachel. I have to meet my business partner soon. If my mother returns, let her know I’ll be out for a while.”
Nora and Collins at the Cafeteria
The evening was calm and serene, the sky tinted with dusk as Collins and Nora sat opposite each other at a quiet table. The warm glow of lanterns made the moment feel almost intimate, but both wore masks of quiet contemplation.
They smiled, sipped their drinks, and stole glances at one another, both waiting for the other to break the silence.
Nora finally spoke, her voice steady but kind. “Collins, I want to understand you better. I want to trust you, not just as a business partner, but as someone I can rely on.”
Collins nodded slowly, placing his drink down. “I’m listening, Nora.”
Her gaze didn’t waver. “How long do you see this partnership lasting?”
He smiled gently, choosing his words with care. “For as long as we respect each other… and keep to the terms we agree on.”
Nora gave a soft chuckle and sipped her juice again.
Then Collins, trying to steer the conversation back toward his mission, spoke carefully. “When I first met you, I honestly assumed you were in a relationship. You’re elegant, successful, beautiful… I was shocked when you told me you were still single.”
She laughed, a little too quickly. “I’m not married, Collins. And I’m not dating anyone either.”
He leaned forward slightly, pressing. “But surely you’ve had suitors?”
Her face shifted slightly, then she drew a deep breath. “Collins… I know what you’re trying to ask.”
She paused, glancing away as a soft blush painted her cheeks.
“I can’t explain my reasons yet for being single. But… we’re both alone. And I think we can...” she paused again, “...we can change that.”
Collins raised his glass slowly, drinking to buy time. She’s falling for me. That much is clear. And he wasn’t surprised. Nora was emotionally opening up to him, but what she didn’t know was that he was walking a razor-thin line.
“I feel like telling you something,” she said suddenly, eyes fixed on him.
His pulse quickened.
“I’m listening,” he replied, hiding the nervous catch in his voice.
Her voice dropped into something softer, intimate. “My heart loves you, Collins. I don’t know how or why… but I’m sure of it.”
Collins froze.
Her words thundered through his chest. His hands trembled slightly beneath the table. This is it, he thought. The point of no return.
Before he could respond, Nora stood. “I need your answer tomorrow, Collins. Don’t keep me waiting.” She picked up her handbag, gave him one final, meaningful look, and walked briskly out of the café.
He watched as Nora disappeared into her waiting car.
Collins' POV
I exhaled, long and slow, after her car disappeared into the street.
What have I done?
Nora Ryan, an heiress, a beauty, a woman with fire in her soul, had just laid her heart before me. And here I was, torn between two choices: love and loyalty… or money and betrayal.
If I say yes to her, will Mrs. Ryan think I abandoned the mission?
I clenched my jaw.
This isn’t what I came for.
But worse, much worse, was the secret I kept hidden.
My father had once conspired against Nora’s father. A conspiracy that may have led to Mr. Ryan’s death.
And I had the letter.
The evidence.
It was locked in a drawer at home. If Nora ever saw it… she would never forgive me.
I stared at my half-empty wine glass. I should walk away. Finish the mission. Get my money. Leave this all behind.
But even as I thought it… I couldn’t stop looking at her eyes.
What if this is love? Real love?
The waiter arrived with the bill. I paid, left a tip, and stood up, the weight of my choices crashing down on me like a storm.
Nora’s POV
The car was silent. James, her driver, said nothing. He didn’t need to. He could feel the tension radiating off her.
She sat in the backseat, head leaned against the window, the soft hum of the engine barely audible.
Why does he keep asking me about my singleness? Can’t he see how I feel about him?
My heart ached with longing and confusion.
I’ve turned down richer men. Smarter ones. More charming ones. But something about Collins... something I can’t explain pulls me to him. As if we’ve known each other before… like a distant echo I can’t quite trace.
I closed her eyes briefly.
I’ll see him tomorrow. He’ll give me an answer. And whatever it is… I’ll be ready for it.
