CHAPTER 3

The silence in the 50th-floor corner office was absolute, broken only by the faint, muffled hum of Manhattan traffic fifty stories below. Elena stood frozen on the plush Persian rug, every professional bone in her body screaming at her to turn around, run to the express elevator, and never set foot in the Vance Enterprises building again. Sitting behind the black granite desk, Alexander Vance slowly leaned back in his leather executive chair. He didn't speak immediately. He simply observed her, his storm-grey eyes traveling from the top of her slicked-back dark hair down to the lapels of her crisp navy suit, before landing squarely on her pale face. A faint, razor-thin smirk touched the corner of his sculpted lips. "Miss Hayes," Alexander spoke, his low baritone voice echoing through the vast room. It was the same voice that had rumbled against her ear five hours ago in the darkness of the St. Regis penthouse. "Do sit down." Elena swallowed hard, forcing her trembling knees to move. She crossed the room, every step feeling like a walk toward an executioner's block, and sank into the leather guest chair directly across from his desk. She kept her posture impeccably straight, resting her leather portfolio in her lap. "Mr. Vance," she began, managing to keep her voice surprisingly steady despite her roaring pulse. "I... I was under the impression I was interviewing with the Vice President of Human Resources today." "The Vice President of Human Resources handles junior staff," Alexander replied calmly. He picked up a sleek Montblanc fountain pen, tapping it thoughtfully against the granite. "For executive positions reporting directly to the C-suite, I conduct the final review myself." His gaze drifted downward to the center of his desk. With painful, deliberate slowness, Alexander picked up the piece of St. Regis stationery pinned beneath his silver watch. He unfolded it between two long, impeccably groomed fingers. "Let us discuss your credentials," Alexander said, his eyes scanning the paper with mock seriousness. "'Strong strategic vision... exceptional campaign execution...' and, according to your handwritten addendum..." He raised an eyebrow, looking directly into her eyes. "...a tendency to issue hasty evaluations regarding performance and stamina." A wave of intense heat rushed up Elena’s neck, burning against her cheeks. "Mr. Vance, about last night—" "Last night, Miss Hayes," Alexander interrupted softly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the desk, "you used my penthouse to vent your personal frustrations, slipped out like a thief in the night, and left three hundred dollars on my nightstand." He picked up the three crisp bills, letting them flutter between his fingers. "Tell me... do you usually pay for your executive networking in cash?" "I didn't know who you were!" Elena snapped, her defensive pride flaring up and overriding her fear. She leaned forward, crossing her arms. "And for the record, I left that money because I didn't want you thinking I was some gold-digger looking for a handout or a morning text. I leveled the playing field." "Leveled the playing field?" Alexander echoed, a quiet, dangerous laugh threatening to escape his throat. "Miss Hayes, my billable rate as a consultant is four thousand dollars an hour. Your three hundred dollars didn't even cover the bottle of gin you drank at the bar." Elena opened her mouth, her face flushed red, but no sound came out. Alexander set the bills down, his expression shifting from dark amusement to something cool, sharp, and intensely focused. "However, I spent the last hour reviewing your actual portfolio. Your pitch for the Apex Global rebranding campaign was nothing short of brilliant. You possess a ruthless, aggressive commercial mind. Exactly what this company lacks." Elena blinked, caught completely off guard. "You... you read my portfolio?" "I don't let personal indiscretions compromise corporate interests," Alexander said smoothly. "You are, without a doubt, the most qualified candidate for the Senior Creative Director position." Relief washed over Elena, so sudden and sweet she almost let out a breath. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. I assure you, my personal life will never interfere with my work—" "I haven't offered you the job yet," Alexander cut in, his eyes narrowing slightly. Elena’s relief instantly evaporated. "Excuse me?" Alexander stood up from his chair. He was tall—easily six-foot-two—filling out his tailored suit with an imposing, quiet authority that seemed to pull all the oxygen out of the room. He walked around the granite desk, stopping right beside her chair. The subtle scent of cedarwood and rain-chilled air wrapped around her senses, triggering a sharp, vivid sensory memory of his hands on her waist hours prior. "You want the title, the two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar salary, and the corner office on the 48th floor?" Alexander asked, leaning against the edge of the desk, looking down at her. "Then you will accept my terms." "What terms?" "First," Alexander murmured, bending down slightly so his face was inches from hers, "you will operate under a three-month probation period reporting exclusively to me. No middle management, no buffers. You answer to my office." "Acceptable," Elena said, holding his gaze despite her racing heart. "Second," Alexander continued, his eyes darkening, "you will accompany me tonight as my personal guest to a private dinner." Elena frowned. "A corporate client dinner?" "A family dinner," Alexander corrected, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his face. "My nephew, Mark, is hosting a gathering at the family estate in Greenwich tonight. He is celebrating his anticipated promotion to Director of Regional Marketing—a promotion I happen to be reviewing on my desk tomorrow morning." Elena’s entire universe slammed to a halt. Mark. The man who had dumped her via text sixteen hours ago, stole her dog, and wiped four years of her life clean. Mark was Alexander Vance’s nephew. "You... Mark is your nephew?" Elena whispered, her blood running cold. "He is," Alexander said softly, his thumb lightly brushing the wooden armrest of her chair, dangerously close to her hand. "And from what my sources tell me, Mark has spent the last two years submitting marketing proposals that bear a striking resemblance to the strategic frameworks in your portfolio." Elena’s jaw tightened. "Because I wrote them. All of them." "I know," Alexander murmured, his voice dropping to a low, smooth purr. "Which is why tonight, Miss Hayes, you are going to walk into that estate on my arm, as my newly appointed Senior Creative Director. You are going to watch his face when he realizes his ex-girlfriend is now his boss's superior." Elena stared at Alexander, her mind reeling. He wasn't just offering her a job; he was handing her a loaded weapon and inviting her to pull the trigger. "Why are you doing this?" Elena asked, searching his cool grey eyes. "What do you get out of ruining your nephew's night?" Alexander straightened up, adjusting his cuffs with effortless elegance. "Mark is lazy, entitled, and relies on nepotism. I despise incompetence in my family as much as I despise it in my company. And besides..." He looked at her, his eyes flashing with a dark, undeniable hunger. "...you look far too dangerous in green to stay sitting at home." Elena felt a wicked, exhilarating spark ignite in her chest. The hurt and humiliation Mark had inflicted on her transformed instantly into a cold, lethal thrill. "What time are you picking me up, Boss?" Elena asked, a small, confident smile touching her lips. Alexander’s eyes flared with approval. "Seven o'clock sharp, Elena. And bring your portfolio—we have a lot of performance standards to discuss."
