chapter 12. Safe In Your Arms

1475 Words
"The Black Council is here!" Evelyn's warning echoed through James's earpiece. Gunfire erupted outside Sterling Manor. The mansion shook as another explosion shattered the west wing. Smoke filled the grand hall. "Move!" James shouted. Without hesitation, he wrapped one arm around my waist and pulled me toward a hidden doorway behind the staircase. "Richard, Michael, come with us!" he ordered. His security team covered our escape as bullets tore through the marble walls. My heart pounded. Everything was happening too fast. We rushed down a narrow corridor hidden behind the walls of the manor. The noise of the battle slowly faded behind us. After several minutes, we reached a heavy steel door. James entered a security code. The door slid open. Inside was a private underground safe room. For the first time all night... There was silence. I leaned against the wall, trying to steady my breathing. James walked over to me. "Are you hurt?" I slowly shook my head. "No." "What about you?" "I'm fine." Only then did I notice blood soaking through the sleeve of his black shirt. "James..." I grabbed his arm. "You're bleeding." He looked down as if he hadn't even noticed. "It's just a scratch." "It doesn't look like one." I opened the first-aid kit on the wall. "Sit down." He hesitated. Then, surprisingly... He obeyed. I carefully rolled up his sleeve. A deep cut ran across his upper arm. "This isn't a scratch." "It'll heal." "You could've been killed." My voice trembled. James watched me quietly as I cleaned the wound. "I've had worse." "That doesn't mean I like seeing you hurt." The words slipped out before I realized what I'd said. Our eyes met. For a long moment... Neither of us spoke. James gently took my hand. "Rose." His voice was softer than ever. "When that ceiling collapsed..." "I thought I'd lost you." My heart skipped. "I was terrified." He gave a faint smile. "I've faced enemies my entire life." "But nothing has ever frightened me as much as the thought of losing you." Tears welled in my eyes. I reached up and touched his face. "You won't lose me." He slowly covered my hand with his. "Promise?" I nodded. "I promise." For the first time... James smiled. Not the confident smile of a billionaire. Not the cold smile of a businessman. Just... James. A man who had finally allowed someone into his heart. Slowly... He leaned closer. I didn't move away. Our foreheads touched. His warm breath brushed against my lips. Just as he whispered my name— The safe room alarm suddenly blared. A mechanical voice echoed through the room. "Warning... unauthorized access detected." James's smile vanished. Someone had found them. "Warning... Unauthorized access detected." The alarm echoed through the underground safe room. James was on his feet instantly. His expression hardened as he reached for the handgun tucked beneath his jacket. "Everyone, stay behind me." Richard stepped toward the security monitor mounted on the wall. "The safe room can't be accessed from outside." James frowned. "Unless someone knows the override code." The monitor flickered to life. A figure dressed in black stood outside the steel vault door. His face was hidden beneath a hood. He didn't try to force the door open. Instead... He calmly entered a six-digit code into the keypad. A sharp beep echoed through the room. The steel door unlocked. James's eyes narrowed. "Impossible." The heavy vault door slowly slid open. A tall man walked inside with his hands raised. "I'm not here to fight." James kept his gun trained on him. "One more step and I shoot." The stranger stopped. "My name is Daniel Hayes." "I was your mother's head of security." James didn't lower his weapon. "My mother died fifteen years ago." Daniel nodded. "That's what everyone was supposed to believe." He reached into his coat and carefully placed an old silver key on the table. Rose froze. The key carried the exact same family crest engraved on her pendant. "I've been protecting Miss Rose from the shadows since the night she disappeared." Rose's heart pounded. "You know who I am?" Daniel looked at her with kind eyes. "I held you in my arms the day you were born." Tears filled Rose's eyes. "So many people keep saying they protected me." "Then why did no one come for me?" Daniel lowered his head. "Because we failed." Silence settled over the room. James slowly lowered his gun, but his guard remained high. "What do you want?" Daniel met his gaze. "I want to help you finish what your parents started." Richard's face turned pale. "You found it?" Daniel nodded once. "The Legacy File." Victor had been quietly watching from the security monitor someone had hacked. His smile disappeared. "No..." Daniel turned toward the camera. "It's over, Victor." Victor laughed coldly. "You still think you have it?" Daniel smiled. "I don't think." "I know." He handed the silver key to Rose. "It belongs to you." She stared at the key in her trembling hand. "What does it open?" Daniel took a slow breath. "A hidden vault beneath Sterling Manor." James looked at him. "What's inside?" Daniel's expression grew serious. "The evidence." "What evidence?" "The names of every person who planned Rose's kidnapping." The room fell silent. Daniel looked directly at Rose. "And the truth about why they wanted you alive." Before anyone could ask another question— The lights went out. A loud explosion shook the underground bunker. Concrete dust rained from the ceiling. The emergency lights flashed red. Evelyn's frightened voice crackled through James's earpiece. "Mr. Sterling!" "The west tunnel has collapsed!" James grabbed Rose's hand. "What about the east tunnel?" There was a long silence. Then Evelyn whispered the words James had feared most. "They're already inside the bunker." The words sent a chill through the room. James's grip on my hand tightened. "How many?" he asked. Evelyn's voice trembled through the earpiece. "At least twelve... and they're moving fast." James turned to Daniel. "You know this bunker better than anyone." Daniel nodded. "There's one last escape route." "Where?" "A hidden elevator behind the archive room." Richard frowned. "I thought it was sealed years ago." "It was," Daniel replied. "I reopened it after I learned the Black Council was active again." A loud bang echoed from the hallway outside. Someone had reached the vault door. Another bang. The thick steel shook violently. "They're using explosives!" one of the guards shouted. James remained calm. "Everyone move." He took my hand again, refusing to let go. As we hurried through the narrow corridor, I glanced at our joined hands. Only yesterday... He had been a stranger. Now, he was the one person I trusted most. We reached the archive room. Daniel pushed aside an old bookshelf, revealing a fingerprint scanner hidden in the wall. He placed his thumb against it. Nothing happened. He frowned. "They've locked me out." James stepped forward. "Try mine." Daniel looked surprised. "It won't work." "Just do it." James pressed his thumb onto the scanner. A soft beep echoed through the room. The wall slowly slid open. Behind it stood an old brass elevator. The doors creaked apart. At that exact moment— BOOM! The vault door behind us exploded. Smoke rushed into the corridor. Black-clad figures stormed inside. "There they are!" James immediately pulled me into the elevator. "Go!" Daniel hit the emergency switch. The doors began to close. A masked man fired several shots. One bullet struck the elevator door. Another grazed James's shoulder. "James!" "I'm fine," he said through clenched teeth. The doors finally shut. The elevator began to descend. Only then did I notice the fresh blood running down his arm. Without thinking, I tore a strip from the bottom of my blouse and wrapped it around the wound. "You keep getting hurt because of me." James gently caught my hand. "No." "I'm getting hurt protecting my wife." Our eyes met. His expression softened. "Rose..." "If I had to choose again..." "I'd still marry you." My breath caught. "Even after everything that's happened?" He smiled—a real smile. "Especially after everything." The elevator suddenly jerked to a violent stop. The lights flickered. "What happened?" Richard asked. Daniel checked the control panel. His face drained of color. "They've cut the power." The emergency lights came on. A cold metallic voice echoed through the elevator. "Elevator override activated." Daniel looked up in horror. "Someone else has control." The elevator lurched again. But instead of continuing downward... It began rising. James frowned. "We're not going to the escape tunnel." Daniel slowly shook his head. "No..." He stared at the glowing floor indicator. "They've redirected us." The elevator stopped. DING. The doors slowly opened. Standing outside... Was Victor Sterling. He smiled as if he had been expecting them all along. "Welcome," he said smoothly. "I've been waiting."
