"You are not my biological son."
James didn't move.
The words echoed through the grand hall like a gunshot.
Victor smiled with satisfaction.
Richard Sterling folded his hands behind his back.
"I never wanted you to learn the truth this way."
James laughed bitterly.
"The truth?"
"You've lied to me my entire life."
Richard lowered his eyes.
"When I found you, you were only three years old."
"Your parents had been killed in a car accident."
"There was no one left to care for you."
"I adopted you and raised you as my own."
Silence filled the room.
James slowly shook his head.
"So..."
"My name isn't Sterling?"
Richard nodded.
"Legally, you are James Sterling."
"And in every way that matters, you are my son."
"But not by blood."
I looked at James.
His face had become unreadable.
The man who always had an answer...
Had none.
Richard turned toward me.
"Rose..."
His voice softened.
"You are my biological daughter."
My heart skipped.
"I searched for you for years."
"When you disappeared, I believed you were dead."
Fresh tears filled his eyes.
"Until Michael Bennett secretly contacted me."
I looked at Michael.
"You knew?"
He nodded slowly.
"I promised to protect you."
"And I kept that promise."
I walked over and hugged him tightly.
"You'll always be my father."
His shoulders trembled.
"And you'll always be my daughter."
James watched us quietly.
Then he spoke.
"So Rose and I..."
Richard nodded.
"You are not related."
"Your marriage is real."
A wave of relief washed over me.
For the first time since this nightmare began...
I could breathe.
Victor's smile disappeared.
"I see you've ruined my surprise."
Richard looked at him coldly.
"No."
"You ruined your own future."
Victor laughed.
"You still don't understand."
He slowly pressed a button hidden inside his watch.
A loud alarm echoed through Sterling Manor.
James's security guard ran into the hall.
"Mr. Sterling!"
"What happened?"
"The estate is surrounded!"
James frowned.
"By who?"
The guard swallowed.
"Not Victor's men..."
"They're federal agents."
Everyone froze.
Richard's face turned pale.
"They found us."
James looked at him sharply.
"Who found us?"
Before Richard could answer, the front doors exploded open.
Armed agents stormed into the mansion.
The lead agent raised a warrant.
"Richard Sterling!"
"You are under arrest for the k********g and disappearance of Rose Sterling twenty-five years ago."
I stared at Richard in disbelief.
"No..."
My voice trembled.
"Tell me they're wrong."
Richard slowly closed his eyes.
Then he whispered—
"I can explain."
Richard Sterling's voice was steady, but the guilt in his eyes was impossible to hide.
The lead federal agent stepped forward and snapped a pair of handcuffs into his palm.
"You can explain everything downtown."
"No!" I cried.
I stepped between Richard and the agents.
"There has to be some mistake."
The agent looked at me sympathetically.
"Miss Bennett... or should I say Miss Sterling... this investigation has been open for twenty-five years."
"We have witnesses."
"We have financial records."
"And we have evidence."
James's expression darkened.
"What evidence?"
The agent opened a thick case file.
"On the night Rose disappeared, Richard Sterling secretly transferred ten million dollars into an offshore account belonging to one of the kidnappers."
My heart sank.
I turned to Richard.
"Is that true?"
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Tears welled in my eyes.
"You... you paid them?"
"No!"
He looked at me desperately.
"I paid them to keep you alive."
The room fell silent.
"They demanded money."
"They promised they would release you if I never contacted the police."
"I believed them."
His voice broke.
"But they betrayed me."
Michael Bennett stepped forward.
"When I found Rose, she was alone outside an old church."
"They had already abandoned her."
"I called Richard first."
Richard nodded.
"He begged me to disappear with her."
"I agreed."
James frowned.
"Why?"
Michael answered quietly.
"Because whoever ordered the k********g was still searching for her."
"I couldn't risk taking her home."
Richard looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"I watched you grow up from a distance."
"Every birthday."
"Every graduation."
"I wanted to come to you countless times."
"But every time I got close..."
"The threats returned."
I struggled to hold back my tears.
"So... you stayed away to protect me?"
"Yes."
Before anyone else could speak, Victor burst into laughter.
"How touching."
He slowly applauded.
"A father sacrificing everything for his daughter."
He smiled cruelly.
"Unfortunately..."
"...none of that changes what's about to happen."
James stepped in front of me again.
"What have you done?"
Victor glanced at his watch.
"I've delayed them long enough."
James frowned.
"Delayed who?"
At that exact moment, Evelyn's voice came through James's earpiece.
"Mr. Sterling!"
"Evelyn?"
Her voice shook.
"There's another convoy approaching the estate."
James looked toward the mansion windows.
Blue flashing lights reflected across the glass.
"Federal agents?" he asked.
"No, sir."
Evelyn took a shaky breath.
"It's not the government."
"It's private security."
James's eyes narrowed.
"Whose security?"
Before Evelyn could answer, every light inside Sterling Manor suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then, a deep male voice echoed through the mansion's speakers.
"The Sterling family reunion is over."
"Rose comes with us."
The cold voice echoed through Sterling Manor.
Every person in the room froze.
James instinctively pulled me behind him.
His hand tightened around mine.
"No one touches my wife."
His voice was low, but every word carried a warning.
The mansion's front doors slowly opened.
Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor.
A group of men dressed in black tactical suits entered.
Unlike Victor's mercenaries, these men moved with military precision.
Their leader removed his black gloves.
He was in his late forties, with silver hair and piercing green eyes.
He stopped a few feet away from us.
Then, to everyone's surprise...
He bowed slightly.
"Miss Sterling."
My heart pounded.
"You know me?"
"I've been searching for you for twenty-five years."
James stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
The man looked at James calmly.
"My name is Adrian Cross."
"I serve the people who protected the Sterling bloodline long before Richard Sterling was born."
Richard's face turned pale.
"So..."
"They finally found her."
Adrian nodded.
"The time has come."
I frowned.
"I don't understand."
Adrian's expression softened.
"You will."
"But not here."
He extended his hand toward me.
"Please come with us."
James immediately stepped between us.
"She's not going anywhere."
Adrian sighed.
"I hoped you would say that."
He glanced at the men behind him.
They slowly lowered their weapons.
"We're not your enemies."
Victor suddenly laughed from across the room.
"Don't believe him, Rose."
"They'll lock you away just like they did your mother."
My mother's face turned white.
"Stop!"
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"Don't listen to Victor."
Adrian turned sharply toward Victor.
"You've caused enough suffering."
Victor smirked.
"I'm only revealing the truth."
James looked at Adrian.
"If you're not our enemy..."
"Then tell us one thing."
Adrian nodded.
"Ask."
James's gray eyes hardened.
"Who ordered Rose's k********g?"
The smile disappeared from Adrian's face.
He answered with only two words.
"The Black Council."
Silence fell over the room.
Richard closed his eyes.
"So they're still alive..."
Adrian nodded.
"They never disappeared."
"They've only been waiting."
I looked between them, completely confused.
"What is the Black Council?"
Before Adrian could answer—
A loud explosion rocked Sterling Manor.
The entire mansion shook violently.
The grand chandelier crashed onto the marble floor, sending glass flying in every direction.
James threw himself over me, shielding me from the falling debris.
Smoke filled the hall.
Then Evelyn's desperate voice came through the radio.
"Mr. Sterling!"
"They've breached the west wing!"
James looked up.
"Who has?"
Evelyn's answer made everyone fall silent.
"The Black Council is here."
