***chapter 5 Adrian was back the next afternoon, but this time, he spoke to her father alone, but Sophie eavesdropped. They were in the balcony, and she could hear them clearly from the small passageway. “Don't put me in such a difficult position, Adrian. Sophie needs me by her side,” her father said, his voice a plea. “You know I'm in a better financial position to make sure she gets the best of life, she would be checked up on by the best doctors in England, I'll make sure she eats well and stay off stress. What else are you afraid of?” Sophie heart fluttered. What could she make out of Adrian's determination? Did he really want her that badly? The thought of being wanted made her heart warmed. She tried to listen again, but something pricked her chest. She tried to find it inside her dress, but there was nothing. Her chest tightened again, this time a sharp pain in her heart. “He….help!” She managed to cry out before falling down and tipping a flower vase over. Her father was by her side in no time, and she could see Adrian standing behind him. “Sophie! Sophie, honey! Can you heat me?” Her father's voice was fading away quickly, and her vision were turning black. She felt her body lifted from the floor, and saw Adrian's face so close to hers before she eventually collapsed. *** Sophie woke up in the hospital. The room was so bright she had to shut her eyes for a minute, before opening them again. “Where am I ?” She mumbled, as she tried to get up. “Relax, honey. You are in the hospital,” someone said beside her, and she turned to see her father, helping her to lie back again. “What happened?” She asked. Her mouth was dry and she wanted water. “You blacked out. We brought you to the hospital and you had a quick surgery. You're fine now.” He spoke so quickly, she felt like she missed some details. She looked as far as she could around the room and Madison was standing on her other side, eyes watery. “Hey,” she managed to say when Madison hugged her. She still felt the sharp pain in her chest, but she could breathe better now. Adrian stood up just then and she realized he had been in the room the whole time. “Are you feeling better now, Sophie?” He asked, standing behind her father. She mumbled yes, but wondered why he was there . A doctor came in just then and checked her heart. She motioned to Adrian and then her father, before heading out of the room. Sophie frowned at the interaction and waited till they left before turning to Madison. “What happened while I was out?” She asked quietly. She listened in shock as her sister narrated the story of how she had been brought to the hospital, and the doctor had mentioned an immediate surgery. The money was more than father could pay at the time, so Adrian took care of the bills. The doctor happened to be really close to the Blackwoods. Sophie sighed. How difficult must it have been for her father to let Adrian handle her medical bills? “Get me water please,” she said to Madison, who poured a glass as soon as she asked. She felt sleepy again, and closed her eyes, her mind replaying everything Madison had said again, before she blanked out again. *** She opened her eyes two hours later and her father was by her side, holding her hands. “How was your nap princess?” He asked. “Good, I needed it.” she replied, and looked around. The room was empty. “That's great, you'll be discharged tomorrow. We'll go home and I'll make you a meal better than the hospital's.” He said as he folded some blankets, and avoided her eyes. “You okay, Dad?” She asked and he looked at her. Sighing, he came close and stared. “What do you think about marrying Adrian? Do you want to?” He asked. She wasn't expecting it, so for a moment, she didn't reply. “He wants me, doesn't he?” She asked and her father nodded. “He does want you, but do you want him?” For some reason, it felt like he wanted to hear no. “I like that he wants me and I don't mind marrying him.” She replied eventually. It was the truth. Her father sighed again and looked down. He stayed quiet for a long while and Sophie watched him. “Well, I hope you don't mind that your wedding is in two weeks, and it would happen in London.” He said finally and Sophie felt a sharp prick in her chest. It was painful, but it made her heart beat faster. Two weeks, in London. “Okay, that's fine.” She replied, and her father left the room. She sighed once the door closed and shut her eyes again. This time, she didn't sleep, but she imagined the wedding instead and what life would be like as a man's wife. Adrian's wife.
