1079 Words
The message haunted Ethan all night. IT'S TOO LATE. The words kept replaying in his mind. Who had sent the photographs? Why were they being watched? And what exactly was "too late"? The next morning, Willow Creek woke to shocking news. Every newspaper stand in town carried the same headline: HAMILTON AND STERLING FAMILIES TO ANNOUNCE HISTORIC PARTNERSHIP. Ethan stared at the newspaper through the window of a small café. His stomach tightened. Something told him this had everything to do with Olivia. His phone buzzed. It was Jake."Ethan, you need to get to town square." "Why?" "Just get here. Now." Ethan immediately ran. When he arrived, a crowd had gathered around a large stage.Luxury cars lined the streets.Reporters moved through the crowd.Something important was happening. Then Ethan saw Olivia. She stood beside her father. She looked beautiful. But she didn't look happy, not at all. Her eyes searched the crowd, looking for someone, looking for him. A few seconds later, Robert Hamilton stepped forward."Ladies and gentlemen," he announced. The crowd became silent. "Our families have been close friends for many years."Ethan's heart began pounding." And today we are pleased to announce the engagement of my daughter, Olivia Hamilton, to Daniel Sterling." The crowd erupted into applause.Ethan felt frozen. As though the world had suddenly stopped moving.Olivia looked stunned. She clearly hadn't known this was coming.Daniel stepped beside her. The cameras flashed.Reporters cheered. The crowd celebrated. But Olivia's eyes remained fixed on Ethan. And Ethan saw tears forming there. Then suddenly she turned and ran, the crowd gasped. Reporters shouted questions.Robert Hamilton's face turned pale. Daniel looked furious.Olivia disappeared into the crowd. And Ethan immediately followed. He found her near the lake. The same lake where they had spent countless afternoons together. She sat on the dock crying. "Ethan."Her voice cracked. He sat beside her."They announced it." I know. "I never agreed to it." "I know." She looked at him. Fear filled her eyes. "They won't listen." For several moments neither spoke. Then Olivia reached for his hand. "Tell me what to do." Ethan looked across the water. His heart ached, because he knew what she wanted him to say. Run away with me. Fight for me.Save me. But he had nothing, no money, no power. no future to offer her. And that truth hurt more than anything."I'll find a way," he whispered.Olivia squeezed his hand tightly."I believe you."Those words meant everything. And somehow they frightened him. Because he wasn't sure he believed himself. That evening, Ethan took a temporary job unloading supplies at an old warehouse near the edge of town. The pay was terrible. But he needed money. As the sun set, most workers headed home.Ethan stayed behind to finish organizing several crates. That was when he heard voices. Two men were talking in a nearby office. The door was slightly open.Ethan wasn't trying to eavesdrop. But then he heard a familiar name. "Hamilton."He stopped, listening."The shipment arrives tomorrow night." "What about the paperwork?""It's already been changed.""And Hamilton knows?" A laugh followed."Of course he knows." Ethan frowned. What shipment? What paperwork? Then another voice spoke. "And Sterling?""He's funding the whole operation."Ethan's heart skipped. Hamilton. Sterling. The two most powerful families in town. Why were they involved in some secret operation? Curiosity got the better of him. Slowly, he moved closer. Inside the office sat three men. One of them opened a briefcase. Bundles of cash filled the case. Thousands of dollars. Maybe more. Ethan's eyes widened. Then suddenly—CRASH! A wooden board beneath his foot snapped, the sound echoed through the warehouse. The conversation instantly stopped. Silence. Then a voice shouted: "Who's there?" Ethan's blood turned cold.Footsteps approached. Fast.Very fast. Without thinking, he ran. Behind him, angry voices filled the warehouse. "Get him!"Ethan sprinted through the darkness. His heart hammered inside his chest. He jumped over crates. Dodged machinery. And finally burst through a side exit. A black SUV immediately started its engine, the vehicle sped toward him. Ethan ran faster than he ever had before. The SUV nearly hit him. Its tires screeched against the road. Ethan escaped into a nearby forest.Branches slapped against his face. His lungs burned. But he didn't stop, not until he was sure he had lost them, only then did he collapse against a tree. Breathing heavily.Terrified.Someone wanted him caught. And now he knew he had stumbled onto something dangerous, very dangerous. The next day, Ethan secretly returned to the warehouse. Most of the workers had already arrived.Nobody seemed suspicious, nobody seemed worried. Had he imagined everything? Then he noticed something near the office. A folder. Partially hidden beneath a desk. His pulse quickened, he waited until nobody was looking. Then quickly grabbed it. Inside were documents, shipping records, financial reports, and one photograph. Ethan's eyes widened. The photograph showed Robert Hamilton and Mr. Sterling standing beside several men Ethan didn't recognize.Behind them sat stacks of crates.Crates marked with symbols that had been blacked out. Whatever business they were involved in, it wasn't something they wanted people to see.At the bottom of one document was a note: Destroy records after transfer. Ethan swallowed hard. This wasn't normal business. Not even close. Someone was hiding something, something worth protecting, something worth threatening people over. That night, Ethan met Olivia at the lake. The moment she saw him, she knew something was wrong."Ethan?"He handed her the photograph. She stared at it.Confused. "What is this?""I think your father and Mr. Sterling is hiding something."Olivia looked up sharply."What do you mean?"Ethan explained everything. The warehouse. The money. The chase. The documents. The photograph. When he finished, Olivia looked shaken."My father wouldn't—" She stopped. Because even she wasn't completely sure. The silence between them grew heavy. Finally Ethan spoke."I think I'm in danger." Olivia's face turned pale. "No." "I think they know I saw something." "No." Her voice broke. "No." Ethan took her hands. For a moment neither spoke. The moon reflected across the lake. The wind moved gently through the trees. And despite everything happening around them, they found comfort in each other's presence. "I won't let anything happen to you," Olivia whispered.Ethan smiled sadly. "You might not have a choice." Suddenly a branch snapped behind them. Both turned. Someone stood among the trees. Watching. A dark figure, completely still. Then the figure stepped backward and disappeared into the darkness. Olivia grabbed Ethan's arm. "Did you see that?" Ethan nodded.Yes. Someone was definitely watching them, again. And this time, he was certain of one thing. The dangerous secret he had discovered was much bigger than he had imagined, and if he wanted to survive long enough to uncover the truth, he might have to leave Willow Creek behind.
