CHAPTER FIFTEEN: OLD WOUNDS

1010 Words
The following morning arrived cold and gray.Ethan barely slept.Mason's message had kept him awake for most of the night. I found something. Four simple words.Yet they had been enough to fill his mind with questions.Over the past few months, every clue had led to another dead end.Every answer had uncovered a dozen new mysteries.Part of him wanted to believe this time would be different but another part wasn't so sure. At exactly nine o'clock, Ethan arrived at a small diner on the edge of Brooklyn. The place was quiet, only a few customers occupied the booths.Mason sat alone near the back with a cup of coffee rested in front of him. The older man looked tired, more tired than usual. As Ethan approached, Mason motioned for him to sit."You look terrible."Ethan laughed."I was about to say the same thing."A faint smile crossed Mason's face. Then it disappeared.Whatever he had discovered was clearly weighing on him."What did you find?" Ethan asked.Mason reached into his coat pocket and removed a folded document. The paper looked old, yellowed with age, and several corners were torn. Ethan carefully unfolded it.At first glance, it appeared to be nothing more than a list of names, dozens of names, most meant nothing to him. Then he noticed something: Three names had been circled. Robert Hamilton, Victor Sterling, and Ethan's father. His heartbeat quickened."What is this?"Mason rubbed his forehead."I don't know exactly."Ethan looked up."You don't know?" "No."Mason sighed heavily."I found it inside a box that belonged to your father."Ethan studied the page again, the names seemed random. Businessmen, lawyers, accountants and several local politicians. Nothing connected them, at least not obviously."What am I supposed to be looking at?"Mason leaned forward."Look at the dates."Ethan did. Most of the dates were from more than twenty years ago.One particular year appeared repeatedly.Almost every name had a mark beside it from the same period, the pattern immediately caught his attention. "What happened that year?"Mason shook his head."That's what I'm trying to figure out."The answer frustrated Ethan but he couldn't blame him.Everyone seemed trapped in the same maze. Searching, guessing and hoping. Back in Willow Creek, Olivia spent the morning helping her mother prepare for an upcoming charity event.Normally she would have enjoyed the distraction.Today her thoughts remained elsewhere, specifically on Ethan and the photograph she had received. The memory still made her uneasy, someone was watching him, perhaps watching her too. The thought refused to leave her mind. As she arranged flowers in the dining room, Grace Hamilton entered carrying several old photo albums."I found these in storage."Olivia smiled."You've been cleaning a lot lately."Her mother laughed softly."It's amazing how much people keep."Together they began sorting through the albums. Most contained ordinary family memories.Vacations, birthdays and graduations. Then Olivia noticed something strange.Several pages had photographs removed. Not one or two, entire sections. The empty spaces stood out immediately."Mom?"Grace looked up. "Yes?" "Why are these pictures missing?"Her mother froze, only briefly. But Olivia noticed."I don't know."The answer sounded rehearsed, almost automatic.Olivia ran her fingers across one of the empty spaces. The missing photographs had clearly been removed deliberately, not damaged, not lost but removed. The realization unsettled her.Because it reminded her of the torn photograph Ethan had discovered, another missing piece, another secret hidden by someone. Meanwhile, Daniel Sterling sat alone in his room, a notebook rested open on his desk, inside were pages of notes. Name, dates, questions, clues. The deeper he investigated, the more complicated everything became. His father's behavior worried him most.Victor Sterling wasn't merely hiding information. He seemed afraid. And Daniel couldn't remember a single moment in his life when his father had looked afraid of anything. That thought alone kept him searching. A soft knock interrupted his concentration."Come in."The door opened. To his surprise, it was his mother.Rebecca Sterling.Unlike Victor, she rarely involved herself in family business. She entered slowly."You've been distant lately."Daniel smiled weakly."I've been busy."Rebecca sat across from him.For several moments she simply studied her son. Then she quietly asked:"Are you investigating your father?" Daniel's heart nearly stopped. The question hit him like a punch."What?"His mother remained calm."That's not a denial."Daniel looked away, silence filled the room. Rebecca sighed."I was hoping you weren't.""You know something."The words escaped before he could stop them. His mother's expression softened. "Daniel." "You do know something,"Rebecca stood. For a moment it seemed she might answer.Instead, she walked toward the door. Before leaving, she paused. And spoke without turning around. "Some people spend their entire lives running from mistakes they made when they were young."Then she left, Daniel remained frozen in his chair. The statement lingered in the air long after she was gone. Mistakes, young, twenty years ago.Everything always seemed to lead back to the same period. The same mystery, the same unanswered questions. Later that evening, Ethan returned home carrying the document Mason had shown him.The list of names occupied his thoughts, there was something important hidden within it.He could feel it,he just couldn't see it yet. After several hours of studying the page, his eyes began to ache.Frustrated, he set it aside. Then his phone buzzed.A message from Olivia. How was your day? A smile appeared despite everything, that simple question felt comforting, and normal. For the next hour, they exchanged messages.Nothing dramatic, nothing mysterious.Just two people trying to stay connected despite the distance between them. For a little while, Ethan almost forgot about the investigation, almost forgot about the threats, almost forgot about the danger. Then another message arrived from an unknown Number. His smile vanished instantly. The text contained only one sentence. Some names should stay forgotten. Ethan stared at the screen, and slowly, his eyes moved toward the document lying on the table. The list of names, someone knew he had it, someone was still watching and whoever they were, they seemed determined to keep the past buried. Outside, darkness settled over the city.Inside, Ethan felt the mystery growing larger around him.The answers were still out there, hidden somewhere beyond the lies, beyond the missing photographs, beyond the warnings. And although he didn't realize it yet, one of the names on that list would soon lead him to a person who had spent twenty years hiding from the truth. A person whose story would change everything.
