CHAPTER NINETEEN: THE ADDRESS

1136 Words
Ethan spent most of the night staring at the message, the address remained on his phone screen, a simple location. No explanation, no name, no instructions beyond a single sentence. If you want the truth about your father, come alone. By sunrise, he still hadn't decided what to do, part of him knew it was a trap, almost every lead he had followed lately had ended badly. Margaret Dawson had disappeared, his apartment had been searched, the threats against Olivia were becoming more direct, nothing about the situation felt safe, yet another part of him couldn't ignore the possibility that this might finally be the breakthrough he had been searching for. After months of dead ends, even the smallest clue felt impossible to walk away from. The address led to an old bookstore in Manhattan. At least according to the map, that detail surprised him.He had expected a warehouse, an abandoned building, something dramatic. Instead, it appeared to be an ordinary bookstore tucked between two aging office buildings, which somehow made it even more suspicious. Back in Willow Creek, Olivia couldn't stop thinking about Ethan.Something felt wrong, she couldn't explain it.She had spent the entire morning helping her mother prepare for the charity gala, but her thoughts constantly drifted elsewhere. The strange photograph, the growing number of secrets, the look on her father's face whenever the past was mentioned, everything felt connected, yet none of it made sense. As she arranged decorations inside the ballroom, Grace Hamilton approached her. "You seem distracted."Olivia smiled weakly."Do I?""Very."Her mother adjusted a flower arrangement before continuing."Is it Ethan?"The question caught Olivia off guard. Lately, it seemed her mother understood more than she admitted."Sometimes."Grace studied her carefully. Then she surprised her."When I was your age, I loved someone my parents didn't approve of." Olivia blinked."What?" Grace laughed softly."You look shocked.""I've never heard this story.""There's a reason."For a moment, a distant look entered her eyes.Almost as though she were remembering something she hadn't thought about in years. "What happened?" Olivia asked.Grace hesitated. Then shook her head."Maybe another day."The answer frustrated Olivia, another mystery, another unfinished story, it seemed to run in the family. Meanwhile, Daniel Sterling sat inside his bedroom staring at the photographs he had secretly taken at the warehouse. The images were blurry, poor quality but still useful. One photograph in particular held his attention. It showed the investigation board.Dozens of pictures, notes, strings connecting names. Most of the details were impossible to read, except for one thing. A name. The image wasn't clear, but after zooming in repeatedly, Daniel finally managed to make out the letters.Blackridge.His pulse quickened, the name appeared again, every path seemed to lead back to it.Whatever Blackridge was, it had become the center of everything and somehow both their families were connected to it. The question was why. Late that afternoon, Ethan arrived at the bookstore. The building looked ordinary.A faded sign hung above the entrance, customers moved in and out without concern, nothing suggested danger, nothing suggested mystery, yet his instincts remained on high alert. As soon as he entered, the scent of old paper filled the air.Rows of books stretched across the room, several customers browsed quietly. An elderly man stood behind the counter reading a newspaper.Everything appeared normal. Too normal, Ethan slowly walked through the aisles, nothing happened, five minutes passed, then ten, no one approached him, no one spoke to him. Eventually he began to wonder if the message had been a prank. Then he noticed a woman watching him from the second floor. She appeared to be in her late forties.Dark hair with serious expression. The moment their eyes met, she turned and disappeared.Ethan immediately followed. His heart began racing.By the time he reached the second floor, the woman was gone, only a single book remained on a nearby table. A thick hardcover novel, nothing unusual.Until he noticed a folded piece of paper tucked inside. Carefully, he opened it.Three words stared back at him. Not here. Follow. Ethan looked up at the far end of the floor, the woman had reappeared.Without saying a word, she walked toward a private staircase. His instincts screamed at him to leave. Instead, he followed. The staircase led to a small office above the bookstore. The woman closed the door behind them. For several moments, neither spoke, then she finally turned toward him. "You shouldn't have come."Ethan almost laughed, the statement sounded familiar.Margaret Dawson had said almost the exact same thing. "Then why contact me?"The woman studied him carefully. For a moment, she seemed uncertain, then she sighed."Because your father once saved my life."The words immediately caught his attention. "What?"She walked toward the window."My name is Rachel Pierce."The name meant nothing to him, yet the seriousness in her voice made him listen."I knew your father many years ago."Ethan's heartbeat quickened. Another person from the past, another piece of the puzzle. "What do you know?"Rachel remained silent for several seconds. When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet."I know he wasn't the man they claim he was,Ethan frowned."What does that mean?""It means someone changed the story." The answer created more questions than it solved, frustration rose inside him."Everyone keeps speaking in riddles."Rachel nodded."I know.""Then stop."For the first time, a faint smile appeared on her face. "You sound exactly like your father."The comment caught him off guard. Before he could respond, Rachel opened a drawer and removed a small notebook. Its cover was worn with age. The pages looked fragile."This belonged to him."Ethan stared at it.His father's notebook, after all these years. The sight alone was enough to make his pulse race but Rachel didn't hand it over. Not yet. Instead, she held it tightly."There are things inside you aren't ready to understand."Ethan sighed, he was growing tired of hearing that.Everyone believed they were protecting him, everyone believed he wasn't ready, yet none of them understood what it felt like to live with unanswered questions. Finally Rachel placed the notebook on the desk."You can have it."Ethan immediately reached for it.Then Rachel spoke again."But read it slowly."Something about her tone made him pause. "Why?" Rachel looked away. "Because once you begin connecting the pieces, there will be no turning back." Silence filled the room.Outside, rain began tapping against the windows, a storm was approaching. And although Ethan didn't realize it yet, the notebook wouldn't reveal the main secret. Not even close. Instead, it would open the door to dozens of smaller mysteries—mysteries connected to friendships, betrayals, missing people, hidden businesses, and decisions made decades ago. The truth remained far away, far enough to sustain years of questions. But for the first time, Ethan finally possessed something that belonged to his father, something personal, something real, and somewhere else in the city, a man watched the bookstore through binoculars from a parked car.He lowered the binoculars slowly. Picked up his phone, and spoke only four words."He's getting closer again, the call ended. The rain intensified, and the game continued.
