My phone buzzed, pulling me out of my hopeless thoughts.
“Speak.”
“Boss,” Danny said, a little breathless. “Judge Reinfield signed the release. Emily’s record is being wiped clean. There’s no evidence linking her to the murder. She’s officially a free citizen.”
I exhaled slowly. “Good.”
“I just don’t get it,” Danny said with a hollow laugh. “Why go through all the trouble? Especially now we know who she is. Why don’t you just-”
“Why don’t you focus on your damn job, Dan,” I snapped, and ended the call.
I dragged a hand down my face. I was way more stressed now than I was a few hours ago.
