EMILY The minute we got back home Nicholas left in a haze. I didn’t ask him what the problem was , his face already said everything. There was trouble. He’d been busting his ass against some unknown enemy recently, I guess it was time for the final showdown. I should have been worried. But I knew Nicholas would be fine. He was calculating enough not to let anyone upend him. And he had Ted and Danny. I was more focused on what he’d said at the fundraiser. All that could replay in my mind was the minute he said he loved me… for the second time. Joy didn’t even begin to describe how I felt.
