33. Precautions

“I don’t know,” Giovanni said, clearly afraid. “I really don’t. I didn’t see his face. He said he was just working for someone else. I never got a name.” Juan looked at him closely. Something felt off. Giovanni wasn’t telling him everything. There was something more. But Juan couldn’t press too hard. Not yet. “Then tell me what happened after they threatened Belle. You must remember more than just that.” Giovanni took a second. He closed his eyes like he was trying to find the words. Finally, he spoke, voice trembling. “I gave them the info about the shipment. The crates, the timing, everything. I thought they’d just take what they needed and go. But when I saw it going wrong, I panicked. I called for backup. I wanted to stop it somehow. I wanted to fix it. But it was already too late.”
