The Moretti Debt
Lorenzo Moretti didn't wait for a response. He reached out and tucked a stray lock of hair behind Milo’s ear with a hand that was steady, tanned, and scarred across the knuckles. The contrast between his gentle touch and the cold iron of the silenced pistol in his other hand made Elara’s stomach turn."Step away from the child," Caspian said, his voice a low, vibrating warning. He had his weapon leveled at Lorenzo’s head, but he was standing in a knee-deep sea of white chemical foam, his footing treacherous.Lorenzo didn't even look up. "You Thorne brothers are so loud. You scream about inheritances and signatures while the real power sits on the floor in a dinosaur sweatshirt. You have no idea what you’re holding, do you, Caspian?""I know exactly what he is," Elara said, scrambling to her feet. She wiped the foam from her face, her eyes darting between the three men in the room. Silas was unconscious, Julian was moaning on the floor with two holes in his shoulder, and Caspian was one twitch away from starting a m******e. "He’s a boy who needs his mother.""He needs his blood," Lorenzo corrected. He finally stood up, dwarfing the space between the kitchen island and the door. "Five years ago, a shipment went missing from the docks in Naples. Not drugs. Not guns. A cradle. Julian Vane was the broker who handled the transport. He was supposed to hide the child in a civilian family until the heat died down. Instead, he kept him as a shield against us."Julian let out a wet, rattling cough. "I… I protected him. I gave him a life."Lorenzo’s eyes flickered to Julian for a fraction of a second. "You gave him a name that didn't belong to him. You fed him lies. And now, you’ve brought the Thorne family into a Moretti business matter.""He's my son," Elara said, stepping between Lorenzo and Milo. She felt the cold sweat on her neck. "I don't care about Naples. I don't care about your shipments. If you want him, you have to go through me."Lorenzo smiled, a slow, predatory movement of his lips. "I was told the invisible architect had a spine. But look around you, Elara. The house is surrounded. My men are in your gardens. Your husband’s security detail is currently face-down in the driveway."Caspian shifted his weight, his eyes cutting to the windows. The red emergency lights were still flashing, casting rhythmic, bloody shadows across the white foam. "My team doesn't go down that easily, Moretti.""They do when they realize I’m the one paying their offshore bonuses this month," Lorenzo said. The betrayal hit Elara harder than the physical struggle. She looked at Caspian, seeing the brief flash of shock in his eyes before he masked it with ice. Even the untouchable Caspian Thorne had been outplayed in his own backyard."The boy comes with me," Lorenzo said, reaching for Milo’s arm. "Now.""Wait!" Elara shouted. She reached for the tablet on the counter, the one she had smashed. The screen was black, but the internal hardware was still humming. "You want the Moretti legacy? You want the boy to be the head of your family one day? He won't survive the night if you take him now."Lorenzo paused, his hand inches from Milo’s jacket. "Why?""Because Silas didn't just rig the gas," Elara lied, her mind spinning at a thousand miles an hour. She had to create a reason for them to stay, to wait for a miracle. "He initiated a digital dead-man’s switch. The Thorne servers are linked to Milo’s biometric signature. If he leaves this perimeter without the override code, the entire Moretti financial portfolio, which Silas has been tracking for years, gets dumped onto the Interpol public server."Lorenzo narrowed his eyes. "You're bluffing.""Try me," Elara said, holding up the cracked tablet. "I built the system. I’m the only one who can decouple the accounts. If you take him now, you’re not taking a prince. You’re taking a target that will burn your entire organization to the ground by dawn."The tension in the room reached a breaking point. Outside, the sound of a heavy helicopter began to rattle the kitchen windows."That's not the police," Caspian whispered, his eyes on the ceiling."No," Silas’s voice came from the floor. He was pushing himself up, blood matting his hair, his face a mask of primal rage. He looked at Lorenzo, then at Elara. "That's the rest of the Thorne board. They don't care about Moretti. They don't care about the boy. They're here to sanitize the site.""Sanitize?" Elara asked."No witnesses, Elara," Silas spat. "If they find out I'm alive and the inheritance is a mess, they lose billions. They’d rather burn this house with all of us inside than let a single word of this reach the press."As if on cue, the windows at the far end of the kitchen shattered. Not from a bullet, but from a flashbang grenade that bounced across the floor and landed in the foam."Close your eyes!" Caspian roared. The world turned into a blinding white roar. Elara dove for Milo, wrapping her body around him as the explosion rocked the floorboards. The smell of ozone and burnt carpet filled the air.Through the ringing in her ears, she heard the rhythmic *thud-thud-thud* of suppressed submachine guns."Get to the cellar!" Caspian was screaming, his hand grabbing Elara’s collar and hauling her up.She grabbed Milo, the boy’s screams muffled against her shoulder. They scrambled through the foam, slipping and sliding toward the narrow door behind the pantry.A bullet whined past Elara’s ear, shattering a spice jar on the counter. Red pepper flakes rained down like blood. She reached the cellar door and yanked it open. Lorenzo was right behind her, his pistol barking back toward the shattered windows. He wasn't a partner, but at this moment, they had a common enemy: the men who wanted them all dead."Down! Now!" Lorenzo shoved them into the darkness of the stairs.Caspian was the last one in, slamming the heavy steel-lined door and sliding the bolt just as a hail of bullets slammed into the other side. The metal groaned under the impact but held. They were in total darkness, the air smelling of damp concrete and old wine."Is everyone okay?" Elara panted, her hands shaking as she felt Milo’s face in the dark."I'm here," Milo sobbed."I’m hit," Julian’s voice came from the top of the stairs. He had crawled in behind them, a trail of blood marking his path."Good," Caspian snapped. He clicked on a small tactical light. The beam cut through the dark, illuminating the small, cramped space.Silas was missing."Where is he?" Elara asked, her heart leaping into her throat. "Where is Silas?"Caspian looked at the door. "He didn't make it in. He stayed in the kitchen.""He stayed to finish the job," Lorenzo said, checking the magazine of his pistol. "He’s going to trade the boy’s location for his life.""He doesn't know where we are," Elara said. "The cellar isn't in the original blueprints. I added it during the remodel.""He’s a Thorne," Caspian said, looking at the ceiling as the sound of boots stomped overhead. "He’ll find us."Suddenly, the house above them went silent. The gunfire stopped. The shouting stopped. The only sound was the low, steady hum of the ventilation system. Then, the intercom on the cellar wall crackled to life."Elara," Silas’s voice echoed through the small room. He sounded calm. Too calm. "I found your little dead-man’s switch. It’s clever. Truly. But you forgot one thing."Elara stared at the speaker."I don't need the code to stop the dump," Silas said. "I just need to remove the biometric source. I have a thermobaric charge set against the cellar door. In sixty seconds, I’m going to turn that room into an oven.""Silas, don't!" Caspian yelled at the speaker. "He's your son!""He's a mistake," Silas replied. "And you, Caspian, are a footnote. Elara, you have thirty seconds to push the boy out the laundry chute. If he’s in the basket in the next half-minute, I let you and Caspian live. If not... Well, I always had a good bonfire."Elara looked at the small, square opening of the laundry chute at the back of the cellar. It was the only way out, and it led directly to the mudroom, where Silas was waiting."Don't do it," Lorenzo said, his gun pointed at the chute. "I'll kill him the moment his head pops out.""If she doesn't, we all burn," Caspian said.Milo looked at the dark hole of the chute, then back at Elara. He wasn't crying anymore. He looked strangely old, his small face set in a mask of grim determination."Mama," Milo whispered. "I can go. I can hide.""No," Elara said, her voice a low growl. She looked at the tablet, then at the wiring running along the cellar ceiling. "Caspian, give me your lighter.""What are you doing?""I'm going to give him exactly what he wants," Elara said. She grabbed a bottle of high-proof grain alcohol from the wine rack and a rag. "I'm going to send him a message."She began to soak the rag, her eyes locked on the laundry chute."Ten seconds, Elara," Silas’s voice boomed. She shoved the rag into the bottle, lit it, and looked at Caspian."When I throw this, you hit the manual override for the gas line we tapped earlier," Elara said."Elara, that'll blow the whole back of the house," Caspian said."Then we'd better be behind the concrete reinforcement," she replied."Five," Silas counted. "Four."Elara stepped up to the chute."Three.""Two."She didn't throw the bottle. She held it."One."The door didn't explode. Instead, a soft “click” echoed through the room. The cellar door swung open slowly.Silas wasn't there. Standing in the doorway was Sienna. She was covered in soot, her expensive dress torn, and she was holding Silas’s remote."He was going to leave me in the kitchen," Sienna said, her voice trembling with a manic edge. "He was going to let them kill me too."She looked at Elara, then at Milo."The Morettis are at the front gate," Sienna whispered. "But there’s a third group. They just breached the north wall. They aren't wearing suits, Elara. They’re wearing military fatigues.""Who?" Caspian asked.Sienna looked at Elara with a look of pure terror."They asked for the Heiress. Not the Thorne heiress. The “other” one."Elara’s breath hitched. Before she could ask another question, a heavy thud shook the entire house, and the cellar lights flickered and died.In the sudden darkness, a new voice whispered from the laundry chute behind them."Found you.”
