Chapter 3

Adrian arrived just in time to catch the entire scene. "Evelyn! What the hell do you think you're doing, hitting people?!" The moment Layla saw Adrian, her tears spilled over. She piped up in a soft, trembling, utterly pitiful voice. "Adrian... it's fine. It's not the first time Evelyn's done this to me. I'm used to it. Please don't fight with her because of me. I'd hate to be the reason your marriage falls apart." As she spoke, she buried herself into Adrian's chest, shaking like a frightened rabbit. Adrian's heart wrenched. Frowning deeply, he whipped around and snapped at Evelyn, "She's young and naive, Evelyn. How can you be so heartless? Can't you show your own sister an ounce of tolerance?" "You're absolutely right," Evelyn replied, her voice cool and steady. "Precisely because she is young and naive, it is my duty as her older sister to personally teach her some manners—and how to act like a decent human being." "You..." Adrian's chest heaved with rage, completely choked up for words. After a tense silence, a cold, mocking laugh escaped his lips. "Evelyn, I actually felt a pang of guilt earlier. I was planning to buy your favorite painting, Water Lilies, for you tonight. But now? You don't deserve it." He paused, enunciating every single word. "I'm buying that painting for Layla instead." To his surprise, Evelyn merely covered her mouth and let out a soft chuckle. She tilted her head, feigning confusion. "Oh? And why is that?" "As your husband, it is my job to apologize to Layla on your behalf and mend your sisterly bond. But hey, if you apologize to Layla right this second, I might still consider buying it for you." Evelyn nodded thoughtfully, letting out a theatrical sigh. "Oh wow. What a shame, then." Right on cue, the host of the private auction walked over, bowing respectfully. "Mrs. Evelyn, the Water Lilies you won at the auction has been wrapped up. Shall we deliver it directly to your residence?" "Thank you for your hard work," Evelyn said smoothly. She took the clipboard and quickly jotted down her address. Adrian's face drained of color before flaring into a furious, mottled purple. He barked at the host, "What do you mean, it's sold?! I haven't even bid yet! Your agency has zero integrity!" "Sir, all our procedures strictly follow official regulations," the host replied calmly. "If you have any objections, you are more than welcome to file a formal complaint with our management." Evelyn handed the clipboard back, then turned a casual, mocking smile toward Adrian. "If I like something, I can afford it myself. I don't need your charity." Adrian's last thread of sanity snapped. Blind with rage, he lunged forward and grabbed Evelyn by the wrist, his eyes bloodshot. "Don't push your luck when I'm trying to be nice—" Before he could finish his threat, a large hand intervened, clamping down on his wrist with crushing force. Adrian's expression instantly twisted in pain. Julian's towering figure stepped in, shielding Evelyn from view. His dark eyes narrowed dangerously, his voice dropping to a terrifying chill. "Get your filthy hands off her!" Recognizing the intruder, Adrian sneered through the pain. "You again. The little stalker. Evelyn's 'childhood bestie,' right? Buzzing around her like a fly every damn day. Anyone who didn't know better would think you two were already screwing around behind my back." He dragged out the words, dripping with filth, his eyes darting suggestively between them. Julian didn't flinch. Instead, a dark smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. He casually pulled out his phone, tapped the screen twice, and turned it to face Adrian. "What do you think?" Adrian looked down, and in an instant, his pupils dilated in sheer horror. Flashing on the screen were explicit, high-definition photos and videos of him and Layla tangled up together. The angles were so crystal clear it sent a shiver straight down his spine. "How... how did you get this..." All the color bled from Adrian's face. In a panic, he snatched the phone and slammed it onto the marble floor, shattering it to pieces. Julian remained entirely unbothered. "Go ahead and smash it. I have backups on the cloud anyway—from every single angle you can think of. Oh, and by the way, remember to reimburse me for the phone." Adrian's lips trembled, utterly paralyzed. He shot a panicked, desperate look at Evelyn, who stood there completely expressionless. He reached out to grab her again. "Evelyn, stay away from him! Don't believe a word he says, he's a dangerous man—" "Get lost!" Evelyn slapped his hand away in pure disgust, as if she had just touched biohazard waste. "You aren't even worth a single strand of his hair." Without giving him another glance, she turned, naturally slipping her arm through Julian's. Together, they walked intimately into the exhibition hall. Adrian was left standing frozen in the middle of the room, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles cracked loudly. His face shifted between a sickly pale and a humiliated flush, utterly defeated.
