Chapter 3

Nang makalabas na ako ng room mo, I was really excited to show them my new dress. Mommy is also fond of collecting of designer things although hindi naman kami ganoon ka-close. We didn't really bond with each other that much kaya siguro it's too hard for me to interact with them. "Heaven, anak, you look amazing tonight." I saw daddy smiling towards me while standing in front of the living room. "Thanks, dad." "Congressman and his family will be here in any minute kaya pumunta ka na sa labas. Your mother and brother are there already," aniya sabay tapik sa balikat ko. "I'll just have to get some wine from the cellar." "Sige, dad." Lumabas na rin ako ng bahay. Hindi kasi nakapunta last time sila Mommy and Daddy at the congressman's house because of an emergency sa company kaya ngayon nila itinuloy ang dinner. "Sweetie, come here!" I saw Mommy helping our Yayas do their job habang nag-iihaw. "Whoa! That's full of carbs there. Isn't that too much?" "Don't worry, sweetie. I prepared something to balance our dinner tonight. Besides, ito kasi ang paborito ni Congressman since you know they also came from a middle class family before kaya let's acknowledge what they prefer." "Alright." Napatingin na ako sa table at mayroon ngang mga vegetable salad and chicken broccolis and nariyan. There are also plenty of shawarma and other arabic foods since ito ang gusto ni daddy kainin. I already settled down and used my phone habang wala pa ang mga bisita namin. "They're her. Suit yourselves!" ani Daddy. Tinigilan ko na ang paggamit ng phone ko and hide it in my pocket. Good thing that this dress has a pocket. "Buenos Noches, a todos!" (Good evening, everyone!) A fair-skinned woman and a tall handsome man in their mid-40's have arrived. Congressman Panfilo and Mrs. Matilda are here. It's been a while since I've seen them kaya naman medyo nanibago na lang ulit ako. They’re the greatest ally of our fmaily since then pero wala naman akong alam sa personal life nila since hindi ako palaging sumasama sa mga conferences of my parents. “Welcome to our humble home, Congressman!” ani Mommy sabay lapit kay Mrs. Matilda. “It’s been a while, kumare. How are you doing?” “Well, we just visited Barcelona a week ago, kumare. I think you should do it with your husband also.” “We will do it soon, lalo na kapag grumaduate na itong si Victoria namin. You know naman, there have been massive work to be done pa kaya hindi kami pwedeng umalis,” tugon sa kaniya ni Mommy. Napangiti na sa kanila si Daddy. “Let’s sit na and start with our bond.” “Sure, Jericho.” They started to settle down. Tahimik lang din kaming dalawa rito ni Lance habang sila lang ang nag-uusap. It’s also been a while when I heard someone called daddy by his first name. Usually kasi ay Mr. Ocampo or Sir Ocampo lang ang tawag sa kaniya ng ibang tao making Mr. Fanfilo and Mrs. Matilda apart from anyone else. “So, where’s your son, kumare?” “Ah! He’s on his way na. Gusto niya rin kasing bigyan daw kayo ng presents so he personally went into a souvenir shop to buy something,” tugon ni Tita sabay titig sa akin. “I know Celine can’t forget what my son did to her when they were a kid.” Kaagad naman nang napatawa si Mommy and Daddy. “Ah, that was from her birthday 15 years ago. I was surprised that she thrown her yellow shoes na dapat para sa anak ninyo onto the mountain of wine glasses full of rare wines.” “Yeah, yeah, I remembered that!” Sir Fanfilo agreed. Ngayon ko lang din naalala ulit iyong nangyari sa akin during my seventh birthday. That was really the worst experience ever and I can’t forgive that guy. I haven’t had the opportunity to know his name pati na rin ang mukha niya ay hindi ko na halos maalala kaya naman siguro ay unti-unti na ring nawala sa isipan ko iyon. “So, where is he?” “He’s on his way—” Napatigil sa pagsasalita si Mrs. Matilda nang biglang narinig namin ang pagbukas ng main gate. I think his son is here. Kahit na ganoon ka-close ang pamilya namin ay wala rin naman akong alam tungkol sa kanila. “My son’s here,” ani Mr. Fanfilo. Hindi na ako lumingon since it’s only a waste of time lalo na’t hindi ko naman kilala ang anak nila so I didn’t bother. “Good evening! I’m sorry for being late,” he spoke. I can sense a bit of familiarity sa voice niya pero hindi ko na lang iyon pinansin dahil ang tanging concern ko lang naman ngayon ay matapos na ang dinner. “What a handsome man he is! Hindi ko akalain na after ilang years ay magiging ganito ka-pogi ang inyong Baby Tyler, Kumare!” ani Mommy. Bigla namang nagpantig ang tainga ko when I heard that name dahilan para mapasulyap na ako sa lalaki and yes, the guy is no other than Tyler Buenavista, our new professor. “What the hell!” “Heaven, watch your mouth!” Hindi ko na napigilang mapamura dahil hindi ko akalain na ang batang hate na hate ko when I was a kid, is the same person na kinagigilan ko ngayon during my last term in college. “Do you have any problem with me, Miss Ocampo?” Tyler asked, giving me a smirk I really hate. Itinaas ko na lang ang kilay ko. “No, I don’t have a problem with you.” “Ahah! That’s enough, settle down na, Iho.” Hindi ko alam na mas may sisira pa pala sa araw ko ngayong gabi. We started our dinner and tahimik lang talaga ako. Nagmamadali na rin kasi akong umalis dito kaya minadali ko na ang pagkain. “So, dahil nandito na tayo, let’s talk about business na,” ani Daddy. “Alam na ba ng mga bata ‘to?” tanong pa ni Mrs. Matilda. I don’t know what they’re talking about so as long as it doesn’t concern me, okay lang. “Not yet, but my son knows it already.” “Alright, then I think I’ll be announcing formally that my daughter Heaven, and your son Tyler will get married in order to strengthen our family bond together.” As daddy started announcing those words, bigla na lang akong napatigil sa pagkain. What the fvck are they talking about?
