The door to Dr. Weston's office clicked softly behind Lily as she stepped out, the cool hallway air replaced by the warm breeze outside. She blinked into the sunlight and made her way across the courtyard, her heart still fluttering - not just from the academic explanation but from the moment their eyes had held for a beat too long. As the sun cast golden slays of lights across the paving stones, she spotted a familiar figure standing near the steps--Amelia, sipping from a cold drink, her eyes scanning the direction Lily was coming from.
"There you are," Amelia said with a teasing smile. "Where have you been sneaking off to?"
Lily gave a little smile and walked over, brushing her hair behind her ear. "Nowhere shady, I just... went to ask Dr. Weston about the project."
Amelia's eyes widened slightly. "Did he explain it well?"
"Yeah," Lily replied with a shrug, "he's intense, but breaks things down easily." Her voice softened toward the end without her realizing.
Amelia raised an eyebrow but said nothing. She gestured toward a bench under one of the large trees near the student lawn. "Come, sit. You owe me an update."
They walked together, settling onto the bench, the sun casting a soft glow around them.
As they were mid-laughing over Amelia's retelling of a group chat drama, a voice interrupted gently, "Amelia?"
They both looked up.
A tall guy stood before them--tousled dark hair, striking features, with a calm, confident posture. He wore a dark tee under a denim jacket and held a notebook in one hand.
"Yeah?" Amelia answered, blinking.
"I'm Jayden. "Just saw the group list--we're in the same team for the literature project." He smiled, friendly and effortlessly charming. "Thought I'd say hi and maybe talk a little about ideas later?"
"Oh--great! "Yes, nice to meet you." Amelia smiled, clearly a bit flustered and delighted.
Jayden turned briefly to Lily. "Hey"
"Hi," Lily said simply, offering a polite smile.
"Alright, I'll let you two chill. Just thought I'd check in. "See you later," he said, giving a small wave as he headed off.
Once he was out of earshot, Lily leaned closer with a teasing grin. "Well, well... Mr Tall--and--smells-like--expensive-cologne."
Amelia laughed. "Don't start."
Lily raised a brow, grinning. "He looked like a certified playboy. That kind of jawline isn't just walking around for free."
"You're terrible," Amelia said, nudging her arm. "You don't know him yet."
"I don't need to. It's in the confident walk, the perfect hair, and the 'oh-I-just-came-to-say-hi' casual charm."
Amelia sighed, still smiling, "Okay, maybe he's a little smooth. But let me enjoy this. At least he doesn't look like he bites,"
"Not yet," Lily teased.
They both laughed, the kind of laughter that meant something real was blooming-not just in their friendship, but in the strange, beautiful life beginning to unfold for them.
Just then, a girl in a sporty red and white jersey approached them, handing out small flyers. "Hey, you two! There's a basketball game in the sport's hall later this evening. It's just a practice match, but we're preparing for a big one against Ridgefield College next week. Come cheer us on?"
Lily took the flyer politely and smiled. "Oh, thanks, but I don't think I can. I need to catch up on some reading."
"Oh, come on," Amelia nudged her. "You can study later." We've been on campus for three weeks, and you haven't gone to a single event yet. A break won't hurt."
Lily hesitated, looking at the flyer again.
"They'll have snacks," Amelia added quickly.
Lily narrowed her eyes. "You're bribing me with food?"
"I'm motivating you with snacks and potential fun. Big difference. And I promise we won't stay long."
With a defeated chuckle, Lily gave in. "Fine. But I'm not wearing anything with a team color."
"No promises!" Amelia grinned as they stood up and walked towards their dorm, already chatting about what snacks might be there and who might be playing.
And for the first time in a while, Lily felt like she was starting to belong.
