Episode 6-A Voice That Lingered

674 Words
Daniel's POV He kept his posture relaxed, his tone even. Decades of training-first in boardrooms, then in lecture halls-had taught how to command a room without revealing a single thought. But her answer had caught him off guard. Lily Harper. There was something measured in her voice. Not rehearsed, but thoughtful-like she didn't just want to be right. She wanted to understand. Daniel walked the length of the room, gesturing as he discussed postmodernism and narrative truths, but a part of his mind wasn't listening to himself anymore. It lingered, annoyingly, on that one moment. The flicker of confidence in her eyes. The subtle shift of her shoulders when he said "Precisely." It shouldn't matter. Students had good answers all the time. He praised the. He moved on. But when he glanced her way again-just for a heartbeat-she was scribbling in her notebook, brow furrowed in concentration. Sharp mind. Brighter than she realizes. He straightened his tie and continued. Business as usual. But the classroom suddenly felt warmer than it should've been. Scene Two: Whispers and Coffee - Lily's POV The hall buzzed as students spilled out after their first literature and Cultural Theory lecture. Most were still wide-eyed from Dr. Weston's intense presence, and a few whispered excitedly, passing stories down the corridor like wildfire. Amelia stood near a vending machine, clutching two paper cups. She hadn't taken the class-her schedule was different-but she waited, curious, and quickly picked up on the strange energy coming from the students who had just attended. Two girls walked by her, deep in gossip. "Did you see that look he gave her?" "Please, the whole room saw it. The tension? You could cut it with a knife." Amelia raised an eyebrow, suddenly alert. Her? Who's her? She glanced toward the lecture hall doors-right as Lily stepped out, clutching her books, her face slightly flushed, eyes unfocused like she was still in another world. Amelia darted forward. "Hey!" she called out, falling into step beside her. "You look like someone just rewrote your entire existence. Here." She handed Lily the second coffee. "Double shot of reality." Lily blinked at her, blinking back into the moment. "Thanks" "I didn't have class, but I waited out here and, well...." Amelia leaned in. "Two girls were whispering like it was a scandal. Apparently, Dr. Weston gave you a look that could set a textbook on fire." Lily nearly choked on her first sip. Amelia's grin widened, "So, what happened? Did he actually say anything to you?" Lily hesitated, then laughed softly. "He just asked a question. But it was the way he looked at me- it was like I wasn't just a student." Amelia bumped her shoulder. "Well, either you just made a very memorable first impression, or he's got x-ray vision and saw into your soul." Lily groaned, but she was smiling now. Amelia raised her cup. "To the beginning of a very interesting semester drama." Lily clinked her cup gently against hers. "Let's hope it's not too interesting." Lily's Inner Monologue As Amelia chattered beside her, talking about the campus café and what clubs they should join, Lily barely caught half of it. Her thoughts were still circling back to that moment-his voice, his gaze. Dr.Weston...... He didn't just look at me. He saw something…or thought he did. The memory made her stomach flutter and twist at once. It wasn't just about how handsome he was-though he undeniably was. It was the way he paused, the way his words briefly faltered when their eyes met, like he had seen her before... or was trying to remember something. But that made no sense. She was just another new student. Fresh face. First row. Nothing special. And yet --- Why did it feel like he already knew me? A breeze swept past, tugging a loose strand of her hair across her cheeks. She brushed it away, stealing a glance at the tall buildings ahead. The semester had just begun, but something told her-deep in her chest-this wouldn't be just another year.
