CHAPTER 2

THIRD POV "She’s okay now." Nyx let out a sigh of relief at the doctor’s words. The doctor offered a few more reminders before taking his leave. Once alone, Nyx turned his gaze to the young woman lying in the hospital bed. Her brows were furrowed in discomfort, as if the bed itself repulsed her. He shook his head and approached her with slumped shoulders. “You’ll be discharged in a bit. I just need to settle your papers,” he said flatly. “Seriously? This is where you brought me? This kind of hospital?” she asked, her voice dripping with exaggerated disgust. “Callie, this was the nearest hospital to your place. Besides, it wasn’t anything serious. The doctor said you just fainted because you skipped meals,” he answered without emotion. Callie Salvador was his current girlfriend, or rather, ex-girlfriend, as of yesterday. One of her housemaids had called him earlier, panicked, saying Callie had lost consciousness. With no choice, he rushed to her house and took her to the nearest hospital. “Mr. Nyx Brandon Mallari, is this how heartless you’ve become? What if the doctors here are incompetent and fail to diagnose something serious?” Callie asked, her voice cracking with emotion. Nyx slowly shook his head. He knew this routine all too well. Callie was trying to guilt-trip him, hoping he’d call off their breakup. “I’ve already informed your brother. He’ll be picking you up. I have other matters to attend to. And if you don’t trust the doctors here, have Gael take you to a hospital of your choice,” he replied seriously. Callie gave a bitter smile. “You know I’m like this because of you. Don’t you have any conscience? I’m hurting because of you, and yet you don’t care.” Nyx pressed a hand to his forehead, clearly tired. “Callie, just accepted that it was over. Move on.” He didn’t wait for her to respond. He turned and walked out of the room. For the longest time, he had wanted to end things, but Callie always threatened to take her own life whenever he brought it up. Yesterday, however, he had finally reached his limit. Lost in thought, he didn’t notice the woman coming from the opposite direction. She, too, seemed to be in a hurry. They collided with such force that both ended up on the floor. “I’m so sorry! I’m really sorry!” the woman said frantically as they both stood up. Their eyes met, and both froze. Nyx immediately recognized her. She was the same woman he’d encountered earlier, on his way to Callie’s place. “It's you again,” the woman blurted once she snapped out of her shock. Nyx smiled. “I told you—we’d meet again.” The woman quickly shook her head. “So annoying.” She brushed past him, and all he could do was watch her walk away with a grin tugging at his lips before continuing on his way. Callie had seen everything. Her eyes narrowed as she watched Nyx smiling. And when he finally disappeared from her sight, she decided to follow the girl he had bumped into. Something about her felt familiar. BRIELLA’S POV I couldn’t believe that annoying guy from earlier was at the hospital too. Good thing I was in a rush—I didn’t have time to deal with him. I made my way straight to the room where my mother was admitted. When I got there, Angel and Mina were just outside the room. The worried looks on their faces made my heart race even faster. “How’s Mom?” I asked softly. “She’s resting. Don’t disturb her,” Mina replied coldly. “Why didn’t you call me?” I couldn’t help but ask. Ever since I was little, I’d always felt that my sisters didn’t like me. They were often irritable with me, always scolding me for one reason or another. Still, I respect them deeply—because that’s what our mother taught me: to be polite and respectful to my older siblings. “We didn’t want to bother you at work. We need money, remember? So, if you can, ask your boss for more work hours so your pay increases,” Angel said flatly. All three of us had jobs, but mine paid more. Angel sold vegetables in the market, while Mina did the neighbors’ laundry. Neither of them had gone to college, so their income barely covered their own needs. Mother and I handled most of the household expenses. She sold goods outside the church. “What’s wrong with Mom?” I asked again. “She needs surgery—appendicitis. It’s already scheduled for tomorrow, so we need a large amount of money. Among us, you earn the most. So do something,” Angel said, her tone firm. I didn’t want to argue. They’d only get angry. So, I just nodded in agreement. Even if they hadn’t said anything, I would’ve found a way. What mattered most was Mom’s recovery. “Do you have any money on you? We need to pay a deposit so they’ll proceed with the surgery,” Mina added. I gripped my bag tightly. Thankfully, today was payday, and I had some cash with me. I had originally planned to treat Mom to a nice meal, but that wasn’t going to happen now. I took out a few bills from my bag and handed them to Mina, keeping a few for myself in case of emergencies. “I’ll deposit two thousand. The other one thousand will be for our food and other needs while we stay here. You go home and rest so you can work tomorrow. We’ll stay with Mom,” Mina instructed. I didn’t argue. I didn’t even dare ask if they had contributed anything themselves. They’d only snap at me. I took a quick peek at Mom, then left. They said no one was at home, so I had to go. As I neared the hospital entrance, I stopped in my tracks. Standing there was Ma’am Callie, as if she were waiting for someone. I wasn’t sure if she recognized me, so I lowered my head and kept walking. “Hey, you!” I froze. I wasn’t sure if she meant me, but when I looked up and saw her standing right in front of me, my heart skipped a beat. “You look familiar. Have we met before?” she asked. “Ma’am Callie, I’m Ella—one of your housemaids,” I replied politely. “Oh, that makes sense. Who are you visiting here?” she asked, which surprised me. She wasn’t usually the type to chat with someone like me. “My mother. She’s scheduled for surgery tomorrow,” I answered briefly. “So, you need a huge sum of money,” she said plainly. I could only nod, unsure of what to say next. She smiled at me—something that made me even more anxious. “I have a job for you. In exchange, I’ll cover your mother’s hospital bills,” she said. My eyes widened. I never expected Ma’am Callie to be the answer to my problems. “Just make him fall in love. Then leave him. That’s the job I’m offering. So, are you willing to accept it?” W-what?
