“They were going to expose her family. Cassie’s father. He was involved in trafficking. She begged me. And I, I was young, stupid. I did it for her. I paid Al-Karim to destroy the files and shut down the hospital after. It was supposed to end there.”
“But it didn’t,” I said bitterly. “And now someone’s using that night against me.”
He stepped forward. “Scarlett, I didn’t know you were the one who brought him in. I didn’t even know you then. If I had…”
“But you still lied to me now.”
His jaw tightened. “To protect you.”
“No,” I said softly. “To protect yourself.”
