Jasper’s POV The ride down felt longer than the trip to the hospital had. My hand stayed at the small of Scarlett’s back, the faint tension in her muscles telling me she was just as alert as I was. When the doors opened, we stepped into the dim rear corridor. The scent of antiseptic was sharper here. The hum of the vending machine at the end of the hall was the only constant noise. We moved quickly, passing a lone nurse who didn’t bother looking up from her clipboard. Outside, the air was cool, almost too cool for the season.
