Chapter 2:
Whispers in the Walls
The host, who offered no name, gestured towards a set of grand, creaking double doors. "The house has many rooms," their voice echoed in the cavernous foyer. "Each with its own story." They led the group into a dimly lit parlor, where dust motes danced in the faint moonlight filtering through tall, arched windows. Portraits with faded eyes seemed to follow their movements.
A sudden chill permeated the air, and a faint whisper brushed past their ears, too indistinct to understand. A nervous cough rippled through the group. The host merely smiled, a thin, unsettling curve of their lips. "Did you hear that? The house stirs."
As they explored further, each room seemed to possess a unique atmosphere. One felt heavy with sorrow, another crackled with a palpable tension. In the library, the scent of decaying paper was overpowering, and the rustle of unseen pages echoed in the silence. A cold spot lingered near a darkened fireplace in the dining room, and the faint scent of burnt food hung in the air.
In an upstairs hallway, a child's laughter, high and chilling, echoed briefly before fading into the silence. One of the guests gasped, clutching their arm. The host, who seemed to anticipate their reactions, simply said, "The house shares its memories."
As the night deepened, the whispers grew more distinct, fragments of conversations, cries of despair, and hushed secrets seeming to emanate from the very walls. The guests exchanged uneasy glances, the initial intrigue giving way to a growing sense of dread. They were not alone. The house was awake, and it was beginning to speak.
