Chapter 6: Weak Wings

1128 Words
The first thing Shomer felt was weight. Not emotion. Not pressure from the bond. Real weight. It dragged at him, pressed against what used to be his wings. For the first time, he felt something like gravity. In the celestial chamber, the light dimmed slightly as he faced the Council. Costus stood before him, vast and unshaken. “You have grown unstable,” Costus said. Shomer lowered his head. “She is innocent.” “That is not in question.” “Then why am I being restrained?” “Because you are interfering.” The words landed hard. Shomer looked up. “I’ve stayed within my limits.” Vigilis stepped forward. “You’ve stretched them.” “I protected her.” “You were assigned to guard,” Lumen said gently, “not to change outcomes.” Far below, something trembled through the bond. Clara’s silence. Shomer felt it again. That quiet exhaustion. The moment she chose not to pray. It wasn’t defiance. It was emptiness. “She’s breaking,” he said. “All humans break,” Costus replied. “Not like this.” There was a pause. Then Costus spoke again. “Your attachment has affected your judgment.” Shomer’s wings flickered. “You risk disturbing order.” “I’m doing my duty,” Shomer insisted. “You’re feeling,” Vigilis said calmly. And that was the problem. On Earth, Clara woke to dull gray light. For a moment, everything was quiet. Then it came back. The job. The accusation. The silence after. Her phone showed missed calls. Messages from coworkers trying to sound concerned. Nothing from Lydia. Clara sat up slowly. Her head felt heavy. She typed a message to her mother. I’m okay. Just tired. Then she turned her phone face down. The apartment felt smaller today. The air thicker. Hope felt far away. Back in the chamber, Costus stepped forward. “Your bond is affecting her,” he said. Shomer froze. “What?” “When a guardian becomes unstable, the human feels it.” The realization hit him hard. Her exhaustion. Her silence. Was he making it worse? “I would never harm her,” he said. “No,” Lumen replied softly. “But you are no longer neutral.” “You’re too involved,” Vigilis added. “And what’s wrong with that?” Shomer demanded. Silence answered him. Then Costus spoke. “Guardians protect destiny, not emotion.” Shomer’s voice dropped. “And if destiny is being twisted?” “That is for humans to face.” That was final. They wouldn’t step in. They wouldn’t expose Lydia. They wouldn’t fix anything. Clara would face it alone. Clara forced herself out of bed. She showered, dressed, and stood in front of the mirror. “You’re not a failure,” she said quietly. The words didn’t feel real. She opened her laptop and tried to update her resume. She left out Baltimore Crest. Her fingers paused over the keyboard. What was the point? Even if she tried, the truth would come out. The record would follow her. She closed the laptop. Above her, Shomer felt everything tightening. He moved closer than he was allowed. His light brushed the ceiling. He saw her hesitation. The doubt settling in her. And he made a choice. “I request incarnation.” The chamber went still. Costus’s gaze sharpened. “You understand what that means.” “Yes.” “You will lose your power, your form, your wings.” “Yes.” “You may forget why you came,” Vigilis said. “I accept.” “You will feel pain.” Shomer didn’t hesitate. “I already do.” That answer shifted something. Lumen glanced at Costus. Costus studied Shomer for a long moment. “If you descend, you cannot reveal yourself. You cannot force justice.” “I know.” “You may fail.” Shomer’s voice softened. “She already believes she has.” The chamber trembled. Costus raised his hand. “Then descend.” It began immediately. Light peeled away from Shomer, slowly, layer by layer. His strength faded. His form weakened. His wings thinned, then faded. He gasped. For the first time, he needed air. It burned. His light dimmed until it was barely there. Then he fell. Not through space, but through everything that made him what he was. The last thing he heard was Lumen’s voice. “Remember compassion.” On Earth, Clara sat in a small café, trying to focus. She ordered the cheapest coffee and opened her laptop again. This time, she forced herself to apply. One job, then another. Even if rejection came, at least she was moving. Halfway through, someone dropped a stack of books beside her table. “Sorry,” a man said. “Didn’t mean to disturb you.” She looked up. For a moment, everything slowed. He looked normal. Tall, simple clothes, slightly unsure. But his eyes… they carried something deeper. Something worn. “It’s fine,” Clara said. He bent to gather his books, but one slipped. Clara caught it. Their hands brushed. Both of them paused. “Thanks,” he said, his voice unfamiliar even to himself. “You okay?” she asked. “Yeah… just adjusting.” “To what?” He hesitated. “I’m not sure yet.” She gave a small smile. “Life does that.” He looked at her more closely. Something pulled inside him. Something he didn’t fully understand. “What’s your name?” he asked. “Clara.” The name hit him hard. Something flickered. Memory. Not clear, but close. Clara. His chest tightened. “I’m…” he paused. What was he now? A name surfaced. “Alex.” It felt strange, but right. “Nice to meet you, Alex.” They shook hands again. This time, it felt simple. Real. Above them, the unseen world shifted. Vigilis watched. “The bond is forming again.” Lumen nodded. “But he’s fragile.” Costus said nothing. Alex sat across from Clara. He didn’t remember everything. Not clearly. But he knew one thing. She mattered. And she was hurting. He watched her go back to her laptop, watched her try again. Something rose inside him. Not power. Something human. Determination. Later, as Clara packed up to leave, Alex felt it again. A shift. Across the café, someone stood watching. Lydia. Her expression was calm, but her eyes were sharp. When she noticed Alex looking, she gave a small smile. Not friendly. Calculated. Clara stepped outside, Alex beside her. Her phone buzzed. A new email.
