Chapter 14The men employed by Sheriff Anderson were eight in total. Violet must have miscounted initially during their chase. There was Sheriff Anderson, his deputy Fredrick Marsh, and a pair of other men Violet recognized from Redrock, though she was hard pressed to recall their names. The three following them were total strangers, though their high quality coats hinted at government men, or at least men well paid. But it was the eighth man, wrapped in leather with his arm in a sling, who caught Violet’s attention most.
“I don’t like it,” said Mr. Hearst. “We stay longer than we should out here and they’re bound to be back.”
“We can’t risk the weather,” Sheriff Anderson replied. “We outnumber the Railwalkers, Marshal. If they come back, we’ll be ready.”
