Chapter 4It was well after dark before Mei and Linus returned. Sitting Bear and Rory had set up decent camp, with a bonfire and a pot of beans cooking. Rory had even managed to snag a rabbit with a wire trap. Violet watched Sitting Bear skin it with skillful, swift hands, and clean its hide while the meat roasted above the flames. As their supper cooked, Violet remained silent, clutching her book in her lap. She attempted once or twice to write in it, but found her words lacking. Instead, she read and re-read the letter she had written to Charlie. It was easy to explain that she had found safety, perhaps even a new life. What could she write to Charlie now?
