The creature froze.
Its twisted body trembled violently as Adrian Nightbane stepped forward through the darkness.
The failed vampire’s glowing eyes widened with something Elena never expected to see from a monster like that.
Fear.
Real fear.
The shadows surrounding Adrian moved unnaturally across the staircase walls, stretching like living creatures beneath the flickering castle lights.
Everything felt colder around him.
More dangerous.
Even Kael Draven slowly pushed himself up from the shattered wall with visible caution in his silver eyes.
“That,” Kael muttered quietly, wiping blood from his mouth, “is never a comforting expression.”
Lucien Valemont climbed back onto the staircase seconds later, his crimson gaze locked completely onto the creature.
“End it, Adrian.”
The monster backed away instead.
Actually backed away.
“No…” it rasped weakly. “You were sealed…”
Adrian’s black eyes remained emotionless.
“And yet,” he said softly, “here I am.”
The shadows exploded outward.
Elena gasped.
Darkness wrapped violently around the failed vampire before slamming it against the staircase ceiling with bone-shattering force.
The creature screamed horribly.
The sound echoed throughout the castle.
Adrian slowly raised one hand.
The shadows tightened instantly.
Cracks spread across the monster’s body.
Then—
Crunch.
Silence.
The failed vampire collapsed lifelessly onto the marble floor below.
Elena stared in horror.
Nobody moved.
Even the remaining creatures farther down the staircase had stopped snarling.
Watching.
Waiting.
Adrian lowered his hand slowly.
The shadows disappeared back beneath his coat like obedient servants.
Kael exhaled softly. “Still terrifying.”
Selene Moura retrieved her silver blade from the staircase floor while keeping her sharp gray eyes fixed on Adrian.
“You really are the Shadow Prince.”
Adrian looked mildly irritated by the title.
“I hate that name.”
“You slaughtered an entire vampire council,” Selene replied coldly. “You don’t get to complain about titles.”
Elena blinked rapidly.
“I’m sorry—he WHAT?”
Kael rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
“Well… technically that happened centuries ago.”
“CENTURIES?!”
Lucien looked toward Elena calmly despite the blood staining his clothes.
“You’re reacting surprisingly well.”
She stared at him in disbelief.
“I absolutely am not.”
Another growl echoed from deeper within the castle halls.
The remaining creatures still hadn’t left.
Lucien’s expression hardened immediately.
“There are too many.”
Kael sighed dramatically. “You say that every time we’re attacked.”
“Because every time you create problems.”
“I create excitement.”
“You create property damage.”
Despite everything happening, Elena almost laughed.
Almost.
Then another scream echoed somewhere below.
Her stomach twisted again.
“There are still people down there.”
Lucien’s jaw tightened slightly.
“Yes.”
Before Elena could respond, Selene suddenly grabbed her wrist.
“We’re leaving.”
Elena immediately pulled away. “Stop doing that!”
“The creatures want your blood. Staying here is suicide.”
Lucien stepped closer instantly.
“She doesn’t leave with hunters.”
Selene scoffed. “And staying with vampires is somehow safer?”
“Currently? Yes.”
“Barely.”
Tension filled the staircase again.
Elena looked between them anxiously.
“Can someone please explain why everyone suddenly cares whether I live or die?”
Silence followed.
Kael glanced sideways at Lucien knowingly.
Lucien ignored him.
Finally Adrian answered quietly.
“Because your blood can wake something ancient.”
Fear crawled beneath Elena’s skin.
“What does that mean?”
Adrian’s expression darkened slightly.
“There are old powers buried beneath Raven Hollow.”
Kael folded his arms.
“And if the Crimson Bloodline fully awakens, those powers wake with it.”
Elena rubbed her temples slowly.
Every answer somehow created five more terrifying questions.
“This city seriously needs therapy.”
Kael laughed softly.
“I’m definitely stealing that sentence later.”
A loud crash suddenly echoed from above them.
Everyone looked upward instantly.
The ceiling trembled.
Dust fell slowly through the air.
Then came the sound of claws scraping across stone.
Something massive was moving through the walls.
Selene cursed quietly beneath her breath.
“That’s impossible.”
Lucien’s eyes narrowed sharply.
“No,” Adrian said softly. “It found the scent.”
Elena hated that word.
Scent.
Every supernatural creature kept talking about her like she wasn’t human anymore.
The scratching above them became louder.
Closer.
Cracks spread slowly across the ceiling.
Kael stared upward.
“Oh, that’s definitely bad.”
The ceiling exploded.
A gigantic creature crashed through the stone directly into the staircase.
Elena screamed.
The monster towered over all of them.
Its pale body looked horribly deformed, with elongated limbs and glowing black veins pulsing beneath torn skin. Multiple mouths stretched across its face unnaturally, each filled with rows of razor-sharp teeth.
The smell alone nearly made Elena gag.
Blood and death.
The creature’s many eyes locked directly onto her.
Then every mouth smiled.
“The Crimson Heir…”
Fear paralyzed Elena instantly.
Lucien attacked first.
He moved like lightning, slamming directly into the creature’s chest hard enough to crack the staircase wall.
But the monster barely moved.
Instead, one massive arm grabbed Lucien midair and hurled him across the hall.
Stone shattered from the impact.
Kael lunged next with unnatural speed, slashing deep across the creature’s throat.
Black blood sprayed everywhere.
The creature roared furiously before throwing Kael down the staircase violently.
Selene moved beside Elena immediately, silver blades ready.
“Stay behind me.”
“I thought you hated vampires.”
“I do.”
“Then why are you helping me?”
Selene’s gray eyes flicked briefly toward the Crimson Mark on Elena’s neck.
“Because if you die, this city dies with you.”
That answer somehow terrified her more.
The massive creature suddenly rushed toward them.
Adrian stepped forward calmly.
Darkness exploded across the hallway.
Shadows wrapped around the monster’s limbs instantly, stopping it only feet from Elena.
The creature roared as the shadows tightened.
But unlike the others—
This monster fought back.
The entire castle shook violently.
Cracks spread across the walls.
Adrian’s expression hardened slightly for the first time.
Interesting.
The creature was actually strong enough to challenge him.
Its many eyes suddenly shifted toward Adrian.
Then one mouth whispered:
“Father remembers you.”
Everything stopped.
Adrian froze.
Only for a second.
But Elena noticed.
So did Lucien.
Kael slowly climbed back up the ruined staircase, blood dripping from his lip.
“Well,” he said quietly, “that sounds extremely concerning.”
The creature laughed horribly.
“He is waking.”
Adrian’s shadows darkened instantly.
“Silence.”
The monster grinned wider.
“The Crimson Bloodline opens the gate.”
Elena’s heartbeat quickened painfully.
Gate?
What gate?
Before anyone could react—
The creature broke free from the shadows.
It lunged directly toward Elena.
Selene shoved Elena sideways just in time.
Claws sliced through the air where her throat had been seconds earlier.
Lucien appeared instantly, tackling the creature through a nearby wall.
The impact shook the entire castle.
Kael cursed loudly before racing after them.
The sounds of violent combat echoed from the next chamber.
Roaring.
Crashing stone.
Screams.
Selene grabbed Elena again.
“This place is collapsing.”
“I noticed!”
Another explosion rocked the castle.
Dust filled the staircase air.
Adrian remained strangely still beside the ruined wall, black eyes distant.
Elena looked toward him nervously.
“What did that thing mean?”
No answer.
“Adrian.”
His gaze slowly shifted toward her.
And for the first time—
She saw fear inside those dark eyes.
Real fear.
“The Crimson Bloodline was never meant to awaken,” he said quietly.
Before Elena could respond, another roar exploded from the next room.
Then Lucien’s voice echoed sharply:
“ADRIAN!”
Adrian vanished instantly into the darkness.
Wind rushed past Elena as he disappeared.
Selene grabbed Elena’s arm again.
“We move now.”
They hurried through the upper castle halls while chaos erupted behind them.
Servants ran desperately through corridors.
Some bleeding.
Some crying.
The castle no longer felt powerful and elegant.
It felt hunted.
Elena’s breathing became uneven as she followed Selene through endless dark hallways.
“What’s happening to this city?” she whispered.
Selene’s expression remained cold.
“Something ancient is waking up.”
Thunder exploded outside the giant windows.
Lightning illuminated Raven Hollow below.
And for one horrifying second—
Elena saw giant shadows moving beneath the city streets.
