The Parents' Mask

2479 Words

Fae could have sworn her parents had been replaced when she saw them that evening. The shed door slowy opened, the evening light spilling in; orange and gold, cutting through the thick shadows. Fae squints her eyes aching after days of darkness she expected another scream, a blow, a harsh word thrown at her like a stone. But instead, she sees her mother crying. Farina stood at the doorway with tears falling down her face. The moisture runs in thin streams over her high cheekbones, marring her usual cold beauty. Her chest heaves with shaky breaths, her lower lip trembles. "My daughter," Farina wails, her voice cracking. "Pregnant? Why, oh why?" She clutches a hand to her chest as if her heart was breaking. Fae blinks. She does not understand, her mother has never cried for her.
