Chapter Thirty-One
YEAR 2023
The nearly full jetliner landed at Boston’s Logan International Airport. Four hours earlier, it had departed from Brussels, Belgium. Onboard sat a young Army officer assigned to U.S. European Command as a junior information officer.
Sawyer Gomez had joined the U.S. Army after graduating from college, and had attended Officer Candidate School (OCS). Following the grueling twelve-week program, he’d become a commissioned officer with the rank of Second Lieutenant and was sent to Europe for his first assignment. Today was his first trip home in eighteen months. He’d come to enjoy military life and the opportunities it presented, but he missed his friends and family. Most of all, he missed his best friend, Devin Baker.
