Just passing through

1559 Words

Border towns are all the same. They rise, exist and fall between nations. Sometimes they change hands. Again, and again. They see all sorts of human traffic pass between great and small countries. Border towns are romantic. They are not quite within any nation, because they are like a safety valve that regulates the flow between different cultures, languages, currencies, goods and people. What may be legal in one nation may be against the laws in the neighbouring country. The border town is built to alleviate this problem. That’s its raison d’être. It contains the infrastructure to facilitate the flow of produce, legal or illegal, for which there is a demand beyond either border. For this reason, morality is in short supply in border towns everywhere in the world and bordersnakes thrive.
