Chapter Two

873 Words
Jane sat at a dimly lit corner of the restaurant, her slender fingers circling the rim of her cocktail glass. The swirling sky-blue liquid mirrored the storm brewing inside her. Clad in a black dress that hugged her figure perfectly, she radiated elegance, though her dark brown eyes betrayed her inner turmoil. Where is he? she thought, glancing at the clock. He’s almost ten minutes late. Charles walked past his now shuttered office, the once bustling space now barren and silent. The space which once viewed stretched before him, a city alive with lights and movement, a stark contrast to the stillness that now enveloped his life. His business had crumbled beneath him, a victim of treachery as his uncle orchestrated his downfall before fleeing to the safety of a distant land, close to the Disney world. Charles felt lost and betrayed, his world turned upside down in an instant. He looked up and nodded, “what a life,” he murmured. “Oh! I have to hurry to make it in time for the meeting” he hurried ahead.. As he approached the restaurant, he straightened his collar and muttered, “Let’s get this over with.” When he arrived, Jane looked up, her expression softening into one of practiced patience. "You're late," she said coolly, though her tone was more teasing than accusing. "My apologies," Charles replied sincerely, taking a seat. They ordered their meals, the atmosphere tense yet charged with curiosity. Over lunch, Jane finally laid her cards on the table. “I have a proposal for you,” she began, her voice steady but tinged with urgency. “Pretend to be my boyfriend for two weeks. Just two weeks. In return, I’ll pay you more than enough to start fresh.” Charles leaned back, raising an eyebrow. “Pretend? For what purpose?” “It’s complicated,” Jane admitted. “My father has expectations. He thinks having a boyfriend proves I’m responsible. Charles shook his head firmly. “Jane, I appreciate the offer, but I can’t. I have a girlfriend. This kind of thing would hurt her, and I’m not willing to risk that.” Jane’s confidence wavered for a moment, but she quickly masked her disappointment. “I understand,” she said, standing to leave. “Thank you for coming.” Later that evening, Charles returned to his modest apartment, where Bella was waiting for him. She sat cross-legged on the couch, scrolling through her phone. “How did the meeting go?” she asked casually, not looking up. “You won’t believe it,” Charles said, collapsing into a chair. “Jane wants me to pretend to be her boyfriend for two weeks. She even offered a ridiculous sum of money.” Bella finally looked up, her interest piqued. “And? What did you say?” “I told her no,” Charles said firmly. “I couldn’t do that to us.” Bella stared at him for a moment before bursting into laughter, though there was no humour in it. “Charles, are you serious? Do you see how we’re living? That money could change everything for us!” “Bella, it’s not that simple,” he began, but she cut him off. “It is that simple! You’re letting your pride and misplaced loyalty get in the way of a solution to our problems. Take the deal, or I’m out.” Before Charles could respond, a knock at the door interrupted them. He opened it to find Jane standing there, a confident smirk on her face. “You? What are you doing here?” Charles asked, startled. “I need to talk to your girlfriend,” Jane said smoothly, stepping past him into the apartment. Bella crossed her arms as Jane explained her proposition in detail, including the financial terms. “I get it,” Jane said, glancing at Bella. “He said no because of you. But I think we can come to an arrangement that benefits everyone.” Bella’s eyes narrowed. “What kind of arrangement?” “Half the money upfront, to you,” Jane offered. “And the rest once the two weeks are over.” Bella considered for a moment before nodding. “Deal,” they shook hands like partners would. “I’ll make sure he follows through.” Three days before the trip, Charles reluctantly moved into Jane’s upscale apartment. The transition was awkward at first, but Jane wasted no time coaching him on her likes, dislikes, and quirks to prepare him for her family’s scrutiny, particularly Amanda’s. The days were a mix of rehearsals and learning to tolerate each other. Jane was exacting and demanding, while Charles, though begrudging, adapted quickly. Despite their differences, they found themselves laughing at small things and sharing quiet moments that felt almost real. As the departure day approached, Charles couldn’t help but notice Jane’s vulnerability beneath her polished exterior, while Jane found herself surprised by Charles’s resilience and kindness. Still, both were careful to keep their walls intact, knowing that their partnership was nothing more than an elaborate charade. But even as they rehearsed their roles, the lines between act and reality began to blur in ways neither of them had anticipated.
