Chapter Five

924 Words
Charles sat in the dimly lit room, his mind swirling with thoughts and doubts. His eyes stayed fixed on a small c***k in the floor, unable to focus on anything else as the weight of his emotions pressed down on him. He couldn’t help but replay the events of the evening in his mind, how Amanda had mocked Jane, and how he had failed to stop it in time. Jane’s frustration had been so raw, so painful to watch, and he hadn’t been able to do anything to shield her from it. And now, here he was, wrestling with his own feelings for her, unsure how to handle them, unsure what it all meant. He shook his head, trying to shake off the thoughts that were only adding to his confusion. The slap he had received from Jane earlier for letting Amanda mock her was still fresh in his mind. He knew it had been deserved. But the idea of mocking her himself, of doing something that could hurt her even more, made his stomach turn. He wasn’t that person. He didn’t want to be that person. "Ahhh!" he mumbled to himself, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “I shouldn’t try that.” The last thing he wanted was to push Jane away or to make things even more difficult for her. He had seen how easily her emotions could get the better of her, and he couldn’t afford to add fuel to the fire. But that didn't make his own feelings any less real, and the tension between them was becoming undeniable. He closed his eyes for a moment, exhaling deeply. He had promised to be there for her, to guide her through whatever came next. He needed to find a way to express his concerns about how he felt without making things awkward, without crossing any boundaries. But right now, it felt impossible. His thoughts drifted to Jane. He could still see her face in his mind, the way she had looked at him earlier, vulnerable yet strong, filled with a mix of frustration and trust. He wanted to be the one she could turn to, the one who would always have her back, but he couldn’t ignore the growing connection between them. And if he was honest with himself, he didn’t want to. With a sigh, he stood up, running a hand over his face. There was no easy way out of this. The only thing he could do now was figure out how to talk to Jane about it—without making things worse. It was clear to him now that whatever was happening between them wasn’t just a simple arrangement anymore. And if he was going to keep his promise to Mr. Douglas, he needed to be honest with himself, and with Jane. Jane moved closer to Charles while he watched in silence, his heart tightening at the sight of Jane’s tears. The emotional weight in her voice, the vulnerability she was showing, made him want to reach out to her, to ease her pain, but he knew she needed to speak freely, without interruption. Her words hung in the air, heavy with the hurt she had carried for so long. “I get it, Jane,” he said softly, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside him. “I understand why you felt the way you did. Amanda has a way of pushing your buttons, and I should have done more to protect you from her. But what matters now is that you’ve recognized it. We can’t change what happened, but we can move forward.” Jane’s breath hitched, her hands trembling as she wiped at her face. “I don’t want to be like this, Charles. I hate feeling like I’m always on the defense, always fighting. Amanda has made my life miserable, and I’ve been forced to keep it all bottled up. It just... it just spilled over. I didn’t want to hurt you, but I couldn’t stop it.” Charles stepped closer to her, his expression softening. “You don’t have to fight everything on your own, Jane. You don’t have to carry that weight alone. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere.” The room was thick with emotion, and Jane’s eyes searched his, as if trying to gauge whether or not she could trust him fully. It was clear to him now that her walls were built from years of hurt, from a past that had molded her into someone who felt the need to protect herself at all costs. “I know you’re trying, Jane. I know this isn’t easy for you,” Charles continued, his voice gentle but firm. “But you’re not alone in this. I may not have all the answers, but I’m willing to figure it out with you. Whatever happens between us, I won’t let anyone, especially Amanda, tear you down again.” Jane looked at him for a long moment, her eyes filled with a mix of uncertainty and relief. She took a deep, shaky breath before nodding, her voice barely above a whisper. “Thank you, Charles. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Charles reached out, gently taking her hand in his, offering her the silent promise that he would be there, no matter what came next. As their hands clasped, the tension in the room began to ease, and though neither of them knew what the future would bring, for that moment, they knew they had each other.
