Jen fell asleep soon. Her mouth went slightly slack. It was only now she was totally still that I saw the slight discoloration under her eyes. The coffee in my otherwise-empty gut felt suddenly heavy—her lack of sleep was my fault.
If I hadn’t announced her pregnancy to the world…
But, f**k, I was excited. Little kids had usually always liked me, but being around Jake and Beth’s baby, watching how happy they were as a family, I had the same yearnings. Meeting Jen nearly a year ago was the best thing to ever happen to me and I couldn’t wait to meet our child. Didn’t matter if it was a boy or girl, at least not yet.
