Chapter 2- Duties

1236 Words
Rosalie's POV 4 YEARS LATER I sat outside the office waiting, my heart was slamming hard against my chest. There was no way for me to calm myself, so I concentrated on tapping my feet aggressively against the tiled floor. "You can come in now, Miss Rosalie." The secretary announced as she walked down the corridor with her neatly ironed dress. I stood up and smoothened my dress, I had no idea of what to expect but my hopes was also high. I pushed open the door and walked in. "Ahh, Rosalie." The man behind the mahogany table exclaimed the moment he saw me. "Good morning Mr. Martinez." I greeted as I took the seat he pointed to. "I'm surprised you're here, when your father started talking about this senate presidency bid, I was expecting to see a man, your husband." That word still left a bitter taste in my mouth, I folded my hands to calm myself. "I was surprised to see you as the candidate." He continued. "I understand Sir, but whether my ex-husband or me, the most important thing is having the interest of citizens as the utmost priority." He nodded as he stroked his beard with his left hand. "Well, that my dear is absolutely correct, I'm glad you know the importance of this role you're taking up." "Yes Sir, I've done my research and my father has briefed me, I hope I get the assistance of the rest Senators, it's a team work after all." I said giving him my best smile. "Congrats again Rosalie on your new position, I must say, this role wouldn't have gotten anyone better." "Thank you very much for your support throughout the primary election Mr Luiz, thank you for nominating me." "It's nothing, I was just returning a favor, your father was a good man throughout his time as President, I'm glad you're continuing the political lines." "Thank you, Sir." I watched as he looked through some documents on his table, this was the moment I have been waiting for. My palm became sweaty. "Yes, here it is." He said going through the file he had just opened. I took the paper from him, it was my portfolio, and it contained the primary place I would be carrying out my duties and what was expected from me. NEW YORK That was the place for my primary assignment. As I walked out of the office , I could feel my smile reaching my eyes, this was what I had been working for, for the last four years, a chance to get the last laugh. I looked at the letter again before sinking into the bathtub with my glass of wine, the water Washing all my exhaustion away. It was worth celebrating but I had nobody to celebrate with, I had called my dad to tell him about my appointment and he had promised to arrange my accommodation, his daughter was coming back home after four years. "I want a divorce." Was the last word he had said to me and after court appearances over my own properties, I left everything and moved here with the promise to start over. I cleaned the tears sliding down my face and emptied the contents of my glass. Placing the empty glass on the rack, I buried myself inside the soapy water, allowing it to finish it's work. ~•~ "Good morning ma'am." The lady I met at the office greeted me. "Good morning," I replied to her, giving her my best smile. "I am Clara Miles and I'm your assistant, welcome to your first day on duty ma." She said with a smile, one that told me she was happy to see me in person. "Thank you, anything on our schedule?" "Not really ma, aside the first sitting, your schedule is pretty free except you want to add something to it." "It's fine." I watched as she walked out of the office, my eyes moving round the four walls of the office. My predecessor might have been someone who loved interior designs, the walls had beautiful colors and the items were made to make the colors. I rested my head on the back of the chair, today was the first official sitting, nothing to discuss, It was just formalities to get acquainted with the new senate president because my process of becoming one wasn't the regular. I had decided to go into politics when my father had told me there was a space to fill, there was no way he was giving the chance to my ex-husband, I convinced him that I would go instead. The election was successful but there was an issue, the political party that one, my political party, the person who was to take the position had fallen Ill and it was so serious that he couldn't be treated medically, they couldn't leave the place vacant, I had to step in. People call it "replacing a sick representative" but I call it luck, grace, and God's perfect timing. "Ma'am, it's time for the meeting." My assistant called, poking her head through the door. I got up and picked my stuff, I breathed in and out till I had my anxiety under control. I followed her down the corridor till we got to the hall for the sitting, pushing the door forward, I stepped in. There were a hundred eyes staring at me, the surprised look on their faces was hard to miss, they had not expected to see a woman or Rosalie Flint–The daughter of the Ex-president, whose husband divorced to marry her best friend. I walked majestically to my seat, making sure not to look in his direction, the one person who had been my motivation to get here. MARCO MARTINEZ "Rosalie?" I had him call my name, fear in his voice. "Senator Rosalie to you," I said in my most calm voice, enough to have him adjusting his tie over and over again. "But how are you the Senate President? Is this how corrupt the democracy in this country has reduced?" I looked at the owner of the voice, he had been the same man who challenged my father after his friend's daughter had slept with my husband. "Senator Davis, if indeed we're going to talk about corruption in democracy, then people like you should be probed first. I don't appreciate your questioning my position but if you want to take it up with anyone, I suggest you talk to the right Authorities." I said staring straight into his eyes. He looked at me when he noticed I wasn't going to break the staring contest, he bowed his head in what I assumed was shame. "Can we proceed?" The rest of the senator murmured a "yes". "Senator Rosalie Flint and I have with me my Resumption letter and another letter to resume my duty from the president, just in case anyone thinks I got in here unlawfully," I said raising the paper and staring hard into Senator Davis' eyes. "Welcome, Senator Rosalie." From my seat, I looked at the people I was going to work with, my seat was high and could everyone's name on the table, only Marco's name wasn't written in front of me. He had definitely gotten the wrong connection, he wasn't even a senator. This was payback time and the battle line had just been drawn.
