CHAPTER 4. AFTER DARK

295 Words
Her thumbs hesitated over the keyboard. One blink. Two. Then she typed. > Amarah: “You’re my lecturer… you shouldn’t be saying that.” Sent. Instant regret. Instant thrill. Three dots appeared almost immediately. Vanished. Reappeared. > Dennis: “And yet, here I am.” She exhaled slowly. Her chest felt too small. > Amarah: “You’re breaking rules.” > Dennis: “Rules never stopped me from wanting something.” She swallowed. Her pulse was loud now — not just in her chest, but in her fingertips. > Amarah: “And what exactly do you want?” Long pause this time. Her screen stayed dark for a beat too long. Then— > Dennis: “You. Outside the classroom. No titles. No lines. Just you.” Her legs felt weak, though she was sitting down. The heat in her cheeks wasn’t from the night air. > Amarah: “Dangerous.” > Dennis: “Only if you think too much.” She bit her lip. Looked at the time. 10:43 PM. Too late for this. Too late to pretend she wasn’t thinking about him. > Amarah: “And if someone finds out?” > Dennis: “Then they’ll know I couldn’t help myself.” Her breath caught. The honesty in his words… it stripped away the safe distance she had been clinging to. She stared at her phone. At the glow of his last message. At her own reflection faint in the screen. > Amarah: “You’re going to make me think about you all night.” His reply came fast. > Dennis: “That’s the point.” And just like that… she knew she wouldn’t sleep. Not with his voice echoing in her head. Not with his words pulling her closer to the edge.
